Scallion White (a handful, thickness like an arm)
Mainly treats Yin syndrome (syndrome characterized by deficiency of Yang and excess of Yin). Symptoms include cold limbs (Jue Ni, reversal coldness), deep lethargy. Bind with a rope, cut off the root and green parts, retaining a thickness of about two cun. First, heat it over fire, place it on the patient's navel. Then use an ironing pot filled with hot coals to press/iron over the scallion white, allowing the heat to penetrate into the body. Prepare three or four more such cakes; replace them when they deteriorate. After a while, the patient should gradually revive, sweat, and have warm hands and feet. Subsequently, administer Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) for warming and tonification. If the hands and feet remain cold after ironing, it is considered intractable.
Qihai (CV6, Sea of Qi, 1.5 cun below the umbilicus), Dantian (CV12, Elixir Field, 2 cun below the umbilicus), Guanyuan (CV4, Gate of Origin, 3 cun below the umbilicus)
Mainly treats Yin syndrome. Symptoms include a face as pale as if scraped by a knife, cold limbs, cyanotic black fingernails, and a body cold as ice. Moxibustion with moxa cones (Moxa Cone) is applied to these acupoints: fifty burns (Zhuang) for standard cases, up to two hundred burns for severe cases. When the hands and feet gradually become warm and consciousness slightly returns, the condition is considered treatable.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, Coptis Rhizome), Crotonis Fructus (Badou, Croton Seed)
Mix the above two herbs evenly, knead into cake shapes, and fill into the navel. Apply moxibustion using moxa cones the size of a longan seed. For mild cases, one burn; for severe cases, no more than two or three burns. After the heat penetrates, sounds will be heard in the abdomen, foul matter will be discharged, and the illness will be cured immediately.
Mainly indicated for cases where sweating fails to occur after taking medicine, thus preventing sweat discharge due to cold weather. This method is suitable. Burn firewood on the ground for a long time until it is extremely hot, sweep away the ashes, and sprinkle boiling water. After some time, sweat will appear. Wait until the entire body, down to the soles of the feet, feels hot, then apply warm powder (Wen Fen) to the skin. The History of the Southern Dynasties records that Fan Yun suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage disease) and feared he would not survive to celebrate the Emperor Wu's bestowal of the Nine Bestowals. He summoned Xu Wenbo for diagnosis. Upon being told the situation, Fan Yun asked, "Can I recover immediately?" Wenbo replied, "Recovering immediately is easy, but I fear you will not rise again after two years." Fan Yun said, "If I can hear the Dao in the morning, I am content to die in the evening, let alone two years." Wenbo then used this method to induce sweating. The next day, he indeed recovered. Two years later, he indeed passed away. Inducing sweating prematurely still shortens the lifespan; how much more so to disregard the exterior and interior conditions, ignore the appropriate timing, and seek immediate results?
Stack several layers of cloth, soak them in freshly drawn cold water, wring out slightly, and place on the patient's chest. After a moment, when the cloth becomes warm, replace it with another piece soaked in cold water. Frequently change with fresh water. Once the heat intensity slightly decreases, subsequently clear the heat with cold-natured herbal agents.
Mainly treats Yang syndrome (syndrome characterized by excess of Yang and heat) with high fever, or mania, irritability, and confusion.
