Dryness of the throat and hoarseness are named Huhu disease (Guizhu, 狐惑). The Hu condition (Hu, 狐) presents with sores around the anus and lower lip. The Huo condition (Huo, 惑) presents with sores on the upper lip or erosion of the Zang organs. Decocting Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连) and Rhinoceros Horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角) is advisable for consumption.
The term Huhu refers to a condition caused by failure to induce sweating in Shanghan disease (Cold Damage, 伤寒). Due to poor appetite and deficiency of Stomach Qi (Stomach Qi Deficiency, 胃虚), parasites gnaw at the Five Zang Organs, causing sores on the lips and mouth. When parasites erode the internal organs, sores appear on the upper lip, termed "Huo"; when parasites erode the anus, sores appear on the lower lip, termed "Hu". Symptoms include dry throat, hoarseness, dry teeth, aversion to food, fluctuating facial color (red, white, black), white tongue coating, black lips, drowsiness, and heavy limbs. It is appropriate to primarily treat with Huanglian Xijiao Tang (Coptis and Rhinoceros Decoction, 黄连犀角汤).
Originally, Jingbing (Spasm Disease, 痉病) belongs to the Bladder Meridian. Symptoms include lockjaw resembling epilepsy and opisthotonos (body arching backward). This results from Wind injury combined with Cold-Damp pathogenic factors, thus dividing it into Gangjing (Yang Spasm, 刚痉) and Roujing (Yin Spasm, 柔痉). Absence of sweat indicates Gangjing, which is easy to identify; Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction, 葛根汤) is the first choice. Presence of sweat indicates Roujing, which is evident; Guizhi Jia Genge Tang (Cinnamon Twig plus Kudzu Root Decoction, 桂枝加葛根汤) is used for emergency rescue. Both meridians are suitable for Xuming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction, 续命汤). For Gangjing, remove Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝) and use Ephedra Herb (Mahuang, 麻黄); for Roujing, remove Ephedra Herb and use Cinnamon Twig. Following this method is most effective.
Jingbing is Taiyang Wind Strike (Taiyang Zhongfeng, 太阳中风) compounded by secondary exposure to Cold-Damp. Excessive sweating in Taiyang syndrome, inducing sweating in Dampness patients, blood deficiency postpartum, and broken-skin wind (tetanus, 破伤风) can all lead to Jingbing. The Classics state: body heat with cold feet, stiffness and tension of the head and neck, aversion to cold, heat in the head, red face, opisthotonos, lockjaw, and deep-thin pulse constitute the presentation of Jingbing. If Wind is contracted first, followed by Cold, with no sweat and aversion to cold, it is called Gangjing. If Wind is contracted first, followed by Cold, with aversion to wind and sweat, it is called Roujing. Ancient formulas generally use modified Xiaoxuming Tang. Remove Mahang for those with sweat; remove Guizhi for those without sweat. However, Gangjing belongs to Yang and often presents with urgent fullness symptoms, suitable for purging with Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction, 大承气汤). Roujing belongs to Yin and often presents with Jue-ni (cold extremities, 厥逆) symptoms, suitable for warming with Guixin Baizhu San (Cinnamon Heart and Atractylodes Powder, 桂心白术散) and Fuzi Fangfeng San (Aconite and Saposhnikovia Powder, 附子防风散). Generally, Gangjing is easier to treat, while Roujing is difficult. Divine understanding depends on the practitioner.
Xiaoxuming Tang contains Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根 - *Note: Text says Fangji/Guizhi but standard formula includes Gegen, sticking to text entities*), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 防己), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 桂枝), Xingren (Prunus Seed, 杏仁), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 黄芩), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 芍药), Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 人参), Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, 川芎), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb, 麻黄), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 附子), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 防风).
