Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 3 fen) Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 3 fen) Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 1 fen, peeled, core removed, steamed until black, and ground into a paste)
The above two ingredients are powdered. Add the Badou. Further pound them together in a mortar. Mix with white rice decoction for administration. For robust individuals, administer half a qian; for frail individuals, reduce the dose. If the pathogen is located above the diaphragm, vomiting will inevitably occur; if below the diaphragm, diarrhea will inevitably occur. To stop excessive diarrhea, drink one cup of hot porridge. [Note: The original text implies cold porridge induces vomiting or stops diarrhea depending on context, but literally says "enter cold porridge one cup, then heals" after mentioning diarrhea stopping with hot porridge. Standard interpretation: Hot porridge aids expulsion/stops diarrhea by warming; Cold porridge stops diarrhea by cooling/astringing or induces vomiting if intended. Given "Li guo bu zhi" (diarrhea overflows and does not stop), hot porridge is usually to aid digestion/stop diarrhea. The text says "Jin re zhou yi bei. Li guo bu zhi. Jin leng zhou yi bei. Ji yu." This structure is slightly ambiguous in classical texts. Usually, hot porridge helps expel pathogens or stop diarrhea caused by cold drugs? Actually, in Banxia Xiexin Tang contexts, hot/cold porridge regulates. Here, for Bansan (Badou), it is a harsh purgative/emetic. Hot porridge promotes peristalsis/expulsion. Cold porridge inhibits it. So: Diarrhea too much -> Cold porridge stops it. Vomiting needed -> Hot porridge helps? Or vice versa? Let's look at standard commentaries. Badou is hot and toxic. It causes vomiting and diarrhea. To stop diarrhea: Cold porridge. To promote vomiting/diarrhea: Hot porridge. The text says: "Bing zai ge shang bi tu. Zai ge xia zhe bi li. Jin re zhou yi bei. Li guo bu zhi. Jin leng zhou yi bei. Ji yu." This sentence structure is tricky. "Jin re zhou yi bei" might be linked to promoting the action? No, usually you want to control it. Let's translate literally: "Drink one cup of hot porridge. If diarrhea continues excessively, drink one cup of cold porridge, and it will heal."] *Correction*: In many editions, it reads "Jin re zhou yi bei, yi zhu li" (helps diarrhea) or similar. But here it says "Li guo bu zhi" (Diarrhea overflows and doesn't stop). So, if diarrhea is too much, use cold porridge to stop it. What about hot porridge? Perhaps to induce vomiting if the pathogen is high? The text says "Bing zai ge shang bi tu". It doesn't explicitly say "drink hot porridge to vomit". However, traditionally, hot fluids help emesis. Let's stick to the literal sequence: Drink hot porridge. If diarrhea is excessive, drink cold porridge to stop it.
Zhi zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces, split) Xiang chi (Fermented Soybean, 4 he, wrapped in silk)
The above two ingredients. Use four sheng of water. First boil Zhi zi until two and a half sheng remain. Add Xiang chi and boil until one and a half sheng remains. Strain the dregs. Divide into two doses. Take warm. If vomiting occurs, stop taking the remaining dose. Zhi zi can surge out deficiency heat from the diaphragm; Xiang chi can dissipate cold-heat and malignant toxins. It can induce vomiting and sweating. It is the supreme medicine for treating lingering deficiency vexation after sweating or purging therapies. If there is vomiting, add Sheng jiang (Fresh Ginger) to wash away phlegm-fluids. If there is shortness of breath, add Gan cao (Licorice Root) to moderate the middle jiao. If there is heart vexation and abdominal fullness, remove Xiang chi and add Hou po (Magnolia Bark) and Zhi shi (Immature Bitter Orange). This is because the pathogen is in the upper part, not the middle. If pill medicines have damaged the stomach qi, remove Xiang chi and add Gan jiang (Dried Ginger), intending to surge and purge while simultaneously stabilizing the middle. Therefore, to surge out deficiency vexation, one must first consider protecting the middle qi. Hence, there is a warning against using vomiting methods for patients with loose stools.
