Baitouweng (Radix Pulsatillae) (2 liang), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Qinpi (Cortex Fraxini) (each 3 liang). The above four ingredients are boiled in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Strain the dregs. Take 1 sheng warm. If not cured, take another 1 sheng.
In cases of heat-type dysentery accompanied by tenesmus, Baitouweng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction) is the primary formula. All cases of tenesmus belong to stagnant heat. In cases of diarrhea where there is a desire to drink water, it is due to internal heat; Baitouweng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction) is indicated.
Muli (Ostreae Concha, calcined), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Shuqi (Herba Pteris Multifidae, washed with warm water to remove fishy odor), Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis), Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae, fried), Shanglugen (Radix Phytolaccae, fried), Haizao (Thallus Sargassum, washed to remove saltiness).
The above seven ingredients are of equal proportion. Each ingredient is separately crushed and sifted into powder, then further ground together in a mortar. Mix with rice water and administer 1 fangcunbi per dose, three times daily. Stop subsequent doses if urination becomes smooth.
After recovery from a major illness, if there is fluid retention (shui qi) below the waist, flowing downward, Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder) is the primary formula. This is the main formula for treating water-retention diseases.
Shimi (Honey, edible) 7 he. The above single ingredient is slowly simmered in a copper vessel until it condenses like maltose syrup. Stir constantly to prevent burning or sticking. When it can be shaped, roll it by hand into a suppository shape with a pointed tip, approximately two cun long. It must be formed while hot; it hardens when cold. Insert into the anus. Hold buttocks tightly together. Remove only when the urge to defecate arises.
Da Zhudan (Gall Bladder of Sus scrofa domestica, one piece). Extract the bile and mix with a small amount of vinegar. Instill into the anus. After about the time of one meal, old food residues and foul matter should be expelled; this is highly effective.
In Yangming disease, if there is spontaneous sweating, or after inducing sweating, and urination is naturally profuse, this indicates exhaustion of body fluids internally. Although the stool may be hard, purgatives should not be used. One must wait for the patient's natural urge to defecate. The text implies that one must wait until the patient strongly desires defecation before employing this method. Mi Jian Dao (Honey Suppository) is suitable to moisten and promote bowel movement. Radix Trichosanthis (Tugua Gen) and Gall Bladder of Sus scrofa domestica (Da Zhudan Danzhi) can also be used as suppositories.
Take the cloth from a woman's undergarment near the genital area, cut it off, burn it to ash, mix with water, and administer 1 fangcunbi per dose, three times daily. Urination will become smooth, and slight swelling of the glans penis indicates cure. If the patient is male, take the crotch of a man's undergarment and burn it to ash. This guides the pathogenic fire out from the yin region.
Yin-Yang Yi (Exchange of Yin and Yang) is a condition following typhoid fever. If sexual intercourse occurs just as the illness is resolving, residual heat is transmitted, causing disease. Symptoms include heavy body, shortness of breath, urgency and tightness in the lower abdomen, possibly radiating to the genitalia, spasms, sensation of heat rushing up to the chest, heaviness of the head making it difficult to lift, blurred vision ("seeing flowers"), and stiffness/tightness in the knees and calves. Shaokun San (Burnt Undergarment Powder) is the primary formula.
