A prescription for treating warm diseases with fever, where sudden consumption of cold water causes hiccups (Yue). Rhizoma Cymbopogonis (Maogen) and Radix Puerariae (Gegen), each cut into pieces of half a sheng.
Take the above two herbs, add four sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng of liquid. Drink it when slightly warm. Stop taking it once the hiccups cease. (Hiccups, also known as cold Yue, commonly referred to as cold hiccup.) The *Gu Jin Lu Yan* removes Maogen and adds Folium Eriobotryae (Pipaye). Another variant adds Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Jupi) and Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin).
Hu notes: The above prescriptions are agents for treating Yangming disease of the warm type. In the variant adding Jupi and Guixin, this is likely due to retained fluid in the chest; thus, the acrid-warm nature of Jupi is used to promote diuresis, and the acrid-hot nature of Guixin is used to dissipate cold.
A prescription for treating warm-heat diseases presenting with headache, vexing pain in bones and muscles, dry mouth, and mental oppression. This applies to summer months affected by epidemic toxic pathogens, characterized by external cold and internal heat; or cases where purgation has already been performed but residual heat remains; or cases where diarrhea occurred naturally during a heat disease, accompanied by deficiency heat, vexation, and thirst.
Radix Ephedrae (Mahuang), two liang, removed joints; Radix Anemarrhenae (Zhimu); Radix Puerariae (Gegen); Lapis Gypsi Fibrosus (Shigao), each three liang; Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao), two liang, honey-fried.
Cut the above five herbs, add seven sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Divide into three doses. If purgation has already been performed, or if natural diarrhea has occurred and deficiency heat persists, remove Mahuang and add Zhimu and Gegen. If the pathogenic heat remains unremoved and seminal emission occurs due to dreams, one may remove Mahuang and add Radix Antimidis (Baiwei) and Radix Ginseng (Renshen), each two liang, which will suffice.
Hu notes: The above prescription consists of herbs for treating warm-heat syndromes in the Taiyang and Yangming stages.
(Shan Fan) A prescription for treating heat accumulation in the Lung organ, causing sudden qi disturbance and eruption of macules.
Fermented Soybean (Xiangchi), one sheng, wrapped in silk; Roots of Allium fistulosum (Congxu), cut four liang; Lapis Gypsi Fibrosus (Shigao), eight liang; Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (Zhizi Ren), three liang; Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang), eight liang; Radix Isatidis (Daqing); Radix Cimicifugae (Shengma), three liang; Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), three liang.
Cut the above eight herbs, add six sheng of water, decoct the first seven herbs to obtain two sheng and five he of liquid. Strain, then add Mangxiao. Divide into three doses.
Hu notes: Although the above decoction is stated to treat heat in the Lung organ, it is actually a divine formula for clearing and resolving stagnant heat in the Yangming Stomach organ.
In warm diseases with macule eruption, red macules indicate a poor prognosis with five deaths for every one survival; black macules indicate an even worse prognosis with nine deaths for every one survival. Pang Anshi stated that major epidemics are difficult to save, and Mai Nu Wan should be primarily used. (This is the Hei Nu Wan from *Huo Ren Shu*, see Volume 12 above.) Additionally, *Gu Jin Lu Yan* contains a single-herb Huanglian Decoction; I believe adding Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xijiao) makes its efficacy even more miraculous.
