The convulsions mentioned earlier, if occurring at the corners of the mouth, belong to the Yangming channel pathology; if occurring on both sides of the body, they belong to the Shaoyang channel pathology. It is also stated: Taiyang disease is suitable for diaphoresis (sweating method), Yangming disease is suitable for purgation (downward draining method), and Shaoyang disease is suitable for harmonization (harmonizing method). If these three methods are clearly understood, there has never been a case where the treatment failed to hit the mark. Furthermore, it is said: When the pathogen is in the exterior, acrid-warm herbs should be used to disperse it, such as Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) or Qianghuo Fangfeng Tang (Notopterygium and Saposhnikovia Decoction); when the pathogen is in the half-exterior half-interior, acrid-cool herbs should be used to harmonize, such as Qiangma Tang (Notopterygium and Ephedra Decoction); when the pathogen is in the interior, cold-natured herbs should be used for purgation, such as Xiao Xionghuang Tang (Minor Angelica and Rhubarb Decoction) or Da Xionghuang Tang (Major Angelica and Rhubarb Decoction). For external application, the Congyun Method (scallion moxibustion/warming therapy) remains effective and miraculous. These are secret family prescriptions that have proven efficacious through experience.
*Rumen Shiqin* states: The causes of disease arise from four main categories. One category involves diseases generated externally not due to qi movement disorders, such as falls, cuts, lacerations, falling from horses or wells, beating, bruising, sprains, strains, scalds by hot water, burns, insect bites, snakebites, and poisoning. This is one of the four causes. Some cases heal with internal treatment alone, some require combined internal and external treatment; some heal with external treatment alone, some require combined treatment; some heal with prior internal then subsequent external treatment, while others heal with prior external then subsequent internal treatment. Some require detoxification combined with attacking/purgative methods, while others require non-toxic regulating and guiding methods. The application of therapeutic methods varies: some are heavy, some light; some slow, some urgent; some astringent, some dispersing; some moistening, some drying; some softening, some hardening. Physicians' applications differ in perspective, each adhering to their own views, favoring *Dan* (cinnabar/red/warm) over *Su* (saltpeter/white/cool), hence this further inquiry.
For instance, after falling from a horse or into a well, resulting in being beaten or bruised, if mental disturbances arise immediately, this is due to phlegm-saliva scattering upward. It is suitable to administer Sansheng San (Three Holy Powders) on an empty stomach to induce vomiting. If the patient is weak and emaciated, Dusheng San (Single Holy Powder) may be used for vomiting. Subsequently, administer medicines to calm the spirit and stabilize the soul, such as Dingzhi Wan (Stabilizing Will Pill), containing Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 牛黄), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 朱砂), etc.
For all contusions and traumatic injuries, crushes from cartwheels, or wounds from caning, where swelling and pain occur, drugs such as Yugong San (Yu Gong Powder), Tongjing San (Unblocking Meridians Powder), Shenyuan Wan (Shen Yuan Pill), and Dao Shui Wan (Guiding Water Pill) can be used to vigorously purge approximately twenty times. Then pain will cease and transform into itching. Pain corresponds to Summer (Yang abundance), itching to Autumn (Yin emergence); when Autumn symptoms appear, Summer excess declines. Generally, this pain is acquired externally, not due to pre-existing yuan-qi deficiency. The ancients said: "Pain decreases with unobstructed bowels; removing the disease is like returning home." This method was mastered only by Shuoming and Hou Dehe from Yanggao County, preventing injured persons from suffering sequelae such as strangury, disability, or lameness.
For all injuries caused by blades or weapons, there is a "Daojian Yao" (Blade and Arrow Medicine). The formula uses one jin of Fenghua Duanshi (Weathered Hammered Stone, 风化锻石) and four liang of Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 龙骨). These two ingredients are ground into fine powder. Four days before the Dragon Boat Festival, prick Thistle plants. On the early morning of the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, pound and mix them in a mortar to form dough, shape into cakes resembling yeast starters, pierce a hole in the center, and hang them in a shady place to dry naturally. Afterward, grind and sieve into powder. Sprinkling and applying this powder directly onto the wound yields great efficacy. As stated in *Neijing*: "Treat the exterior first, then the interior," refers to this situation.
For all injuries caused by insects or beasts, or caning wounds with swelling and eruption, or when pathogens penetrate inward, Muxiang Binglang Wan (Aucklandia and Areca Seed Pill) can be taken, 70–80 pills or over 100 pills, taken with fresh ginger, five to seven times daily, adjusted according to deficiency or excess. Additionally, for dog bites or snakebites, do not immediately apply plasters or Shengji San (Regenerate Flesh Powder). Instead, first use Dao Shui Wan or Yugong San to purge toxic vapors, perhaps inducing ten-plus bowel movements. Immediately, pain will decrease and swelling will subside. Only then can plasters and Shengji San be applied. As stated in *Neijing*: "Treat the interior first, then the exterior," refers to this situation.
Yaoshan remarked: According to Zhang Shi, he specialized in strong attacking and purging methods; Xue Shi specialized in strong warming and tonifying methods. Why did these two gentlemen use such opposite medications? Some argued that the South favors [tonifying/moistening] while the North favors attacking. Li Shicai further cited *Neijing·Zheng Si Shi Lun* (Discourse on the Four Errors), stating that wealthy people should be tonified, while poor people should be attacked. Thus, do the two doctors achieve similar results? However, reading Zhang Shi's discussions, there are also methods of regulation and guidance; and Xue Shi's formulas were not devoid of attacking and purging agents. Therefore, only Zhang Shi's methods are recorded here, while the numerous original formulas are omitted due to their volume.
