此方补阴清肺,益脾降气,消痰之剂。士材云∶虚劳之所难者。如脾喜温燥,清肺则
碍脾;
(Self-made prescription) Treats Yin deficiency cough, or excessive phlegm, or dry cough without sputum, or blood-streaked sputum, or pure hemoptysis.
*Ophiopogonis Radix* (3 to 4 qian) *Asparagi Radix* (Moistens the Lung, 2 qian) *Lilii Bulbus* (Nourishes the Lung, 1 liang, double dose if bleeding is present) *Mori Cortex* (Drains fire, honey-fried) *Poria* (Tonifies the Spleen, 2 qian) *Fritillariae Bulbus* (2 qian, double dose if excessive phlegm or blood-streaked sputum) *Eriobotryae Folium* (Descends fire, honey-fried, three large slices, add if cough is severe) *Coicis Semen* (Tonifies Lung heat, dries Spleen dampness, 5 qian, double dose if poor appetite with bleeding)
Add human milk and bovine milk (one cup each, for wonderful effect), decoct into liquid, then add several spoons of refined honey or malt sugar. Grind *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba* and *Fritillariae Bulbus* into fine powder and mix evenly into the decoction. Take frequently.
This is a formula that moistens dryness, clears Metal (clears the Lung), descends Qi, and resolves phlegm. It is most suitable for those with Yin deficiency cough, especially wine drinkers. If heat is severe, phlegm is excessive, and stool is dry and constipated, add pear juice.
Using humans to supplement humans, its efficacy is unparalleled.
The symptoms treated are the same.
*Rehmanniae Radix* (Nourishes Yin, 4 liang, mixed with wine and slightly steamed) *Ophiopogonis Radix* (4 liang) *Lilii Bulbus* (8 liang, sun-dried, use 4 liang) *Mori Cortex* (Honey-fried, resolves phlegm, 3 liang) *Dioscoreae Rhizoma* (Steamed until cooked, 6 liang; grind the above three ingredients finely for the paste) *Platycodonis Radix* (1 liang) *Eriobotryae Folium* (Honey-fried, 8 liang) *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (1 liang) *Coicis Semen* (Stir-fried, 8 liang, add 4 liang if diarrhea occurs) *Poria* (2 liang) *Paeoniae Radix Alba* (Wine-fried, 3 liang) *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle* (1 liang) *Longan Arillus* (4 liang) *Jujubae Fructus* (Tonifies the Spleen, 6 liang)
Decoct the sixteen ingredients into a paste. Add malt sugar and white honey (one jin each), boil until thoroughly cooked and collect the paste. After cooling, mix in powders of *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba*, *Fritillariae Bulbus*, and *Dioscoreae Rhizoma*. Take regularly.
It belongs to the category of restoring life.
This formula nourishes Yin, clears the Lung, benefits the Spleen, descends Qi, and resolves phlegm. Shitai (referring to He Mengyao, a Ming Dynasty physician) said: The difficulty in treating Consumption lies in the fact that the Spleen prefers warmth and dryness; clearing the Lung may hinder the Spleen. If the patient has frequent diarrhea and infrequent constipation, although wheezing and coughing are restless, the priority should be tonifying the Spleen. Moistening and clearing agents should be used with caution. Because the Spleen has the ability to generate the Lung, but the Lung lacks the power to support the Spleen, this Qingning Paste was formulated to include herbs that tonify Spleen Yin. The annotation states: Moistening the Lung does not hinder the Spleen, tonifying the Spleen does not hinder the Lung. This is because the Lung belongs to Metal and follows the pattern of Heaven, while the Spleen belongs to Earth and follows the pattern of Earth. It is called "Qingning" (Clear and Tranquil) because it regulates both Spleen and Lung, taking the meaning of "Heaven is Clear and Earth is Tranquil." I believe adding a few more ingredients to this formula yields immediate results. Users of this formula should not discard it due to the large number of ingredients. According to the Classics, Kidney disease causes Yang Qi to float upwards without root, leading to vomiting, retching, upward rushing of Qi, and asthma. Since Yang is rooted in Yin, Kidney Yin deficiency means Yang has no foundation, rising up to cause symptoms like vomiting, belching, and wheezing. Shen stated that Consumption cough is caused by Yin deficiency and Yang excess. Qi belongs to Yang; excess Qi becomes Fire. Fire nature rises upward, inevitably damaging Lung Metal. Liver Wood, carrying the ministerial fire of the Heart and Sanjiao, rebels against and insults Lung Metal, causing incessant coughing. By dusk, Lung Qi cannot descend into the Kidneys, so night coughs are worse. However, the Lung is a delicate organ; coughing damages the lung membranes, resulting in blood in sputum. Heat steams essence fluids, transforming them into phlegm-saliva. Phlegm and Fire knot together, causing unceasing coughing and rebellion. As Lung Yin declines daily, hoarseness and loss of voice occur, which indicates an untreatable condition. Therefore, at the onset of illness, it is urgent to descend Qi, resolve phlegm, regulate the Spleen and Stomach to generate Ying and Wei, clear and moisten Lung Metal to generate Kidney Water, thereby restraining Heart Fire so it does not damage Lung Metal. Metal and Water generate each other, Yin Fire retreats, and cough naturally subsides. An ancient formula for dry cough is Qiongyu Paste, using *Rehmanniae Radix* (4 liang), *Poria* (12 liang), *Ginseng Radix* (6 liang), and white honey (2 jin). Xian added *Amber* and *Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum* (5 qian each). Grind Ginseng and Poria into powder, cook again over water bath, claiming extraordinary divine efficacy. Although this formula uses Yin-nourishing drugs as the sovereign, Ginseng is contraindicated for Lung heat and should be used with discretion.
