(Self-made prescription) Treats deficiency consumption (Xu Lao) and other syndromes. Its efficacy surpasses that of Liuwei Zuogui Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Tonifying the Left Decoction), and it should not be neglected.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, eight taels) Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, four taels) Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, four taels) Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, four taels) Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, for tonifying the Kidney, steamed with wine, four taels)
Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dosage omitted in original text contextually implied) Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, lightly stir-fried, four taels) Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, lightly stir-fried, four taels) Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, eight taels) Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, lightly stir-fried, six taels) Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, to astringe Lung Qi, mixed with honey water, steamed, dried in shade, four taels) Yuan Yan Rou (Longan Aril, to nourish Heart Shen, roasted dry, six taels; double amount when preparing paste) Lian Xu (Nelumbinis Plumula, to secure essence and strengthen intestines, four taels) Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornu Colla, to tonify True Yin, four taels) Gui Ban Jiao (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Colla, eight taels) Gui Jia Jiao (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Colla, specifically from the plastrum or different preparation, to retreat bone-steaming fever, four taels; both dissolved using Shu Di Huang juice, and roasted with "Jia Su" [shell butter], six taels note: original lists Gui Jiao and Gui Jia Jiao separately with different dosages) Hu Gu Jiao (Pantheris Ossis Colla, to strengthen sinews and bones, four taels; concentrated decoction dissolved in Mai Dong soup is also acceptable) Biao Jiao (Ichthyosbladderae Colla, fried with Oyster Shell powder, eight taels) Huang Niu Rou (Yellow Beef, to tonify Spleen and Stomach, remove oil membrane, ten jin, boiled into paste) Zhu Ji Sui (Porcine Medulla Spinalis, to fill essence and marrow, thirty strips, remove fascia, pounded and boiled with honey) Zi He Che Gao (Placenta Hominis Paste, to vigorously tonify Qi and Blood; Wu Qiu used this in Da Zao Wan [Great Creation Pill] because it possesses the power of usurping creation, greatly praising its efficacy. Eight taels; Preparation method: Wash clean with rice-washing water, cook thoroughly by steaming over water, pound into pulp, mix evenly with dry herbs, dry in the sun).
Total of twenty-four ingredients. Mix all pastes and medullas, form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take on an empty stomach with Longan Aril decoction, or with light salt water. Dosage: three to five qian per administration. For those with weak Spleen and Stomach, it can also be used (context implies suitability or adjustment). If accompanied by cough, intermittently take Qin Hua Wan (Holding-and-Melting Pill) or Qing Ning Gao (Clearing Peacefulness Paste). If blood stasis is combined with fluid retention leading to spontaneous urination: (Decoct Mai Dong and Yi Yi Ren [Coicis Semen], drink abundantly so urine becomes naturally clear). This formula combines tonifying the Kidney, regulating the Spleen, and protecting the Lung. To tonify the Kidney, use Shu Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu, Gou Qi Zi, Tu Si Zi, and Niu Xi; assisted by Lung-regulating herbs, its moistening nature is not considered cloying. To regulate the Spleen, use Shan Yao, Fu Ling [Poria], Bai Shao [White Peony Root], Lian Rou [Lotus Seed Meat], Qian Shi, and Sha Ren, because they lack the risk of aromatic-dryness injuring Yin, and can enter the Kidney meridian. Although Sha Ren appears drying, its pungency can moisten the Kidney. Moreover, Kidney deficiency failing to grasp Qi and return it to its source cannot be remedied without this guiding herb. When paired with Yin-nourishing herbs as the sovereign drug, there is no cause for worry. Mai Dong clears the Lung, and Wu Wei Zi astringes Lung Qi; both serve to protect the Lung. Protecting Lung Metal generates Kidney Water; regulating Spleen Earth also generates Metal to generate Water. Zao Ren and Yuan Rou nourish the Heart Shen: one fears that deficient Kidney Water leads to hyperactive Heart Fire consuming Blood; the other fears Heart deficiency preventing downward interaction with the Kidney. Lian Xu secures essence and strengthens intestines; Lu Jiao Jiao tonifies True Yin; Gui Ban and Bie Jia (Turtle Shell and Soft-shell Turtle Shell collas) retreat bone-steaming fever; Zhu Ji Sui and Biao Jiao fill essence and marrow; Niu Rou tonifies Spleen and Stomach; Hu Gu strengthens sinews and bones; Zi He Che vigorously tonifies Essence and Blood. Thus, substances of flesh and blood are used to tonify the body of flesh and blood, yielding rapid efficacy. Jiayan stated: In deficiency consumption diseases, the hundred vessels are empty; only viscous and sticky substances can fill them. Essence and Blood are withered and dry; only Yin-nourishing substances can moisten them. Therefore, in treating deficiency consumption, even if encountering individuals skilled at taking digestion-promoting pills, one must necessarily combine them with paste preparations. For those with weak Spleen, this is a definitive method. If internal heat is severe, add one or two items to clear steaming fever. This formula is urgently suitable for men and women whose Yin deficiency is about to develop into deficiency consumption.
