Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang, 8 liang) Cornus Fruit (Yu Rou, steamed, 4 liang) Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi, 3 liang) Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi, boiled in wine, dried by baking, 3 liang) Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi, steamed in wine, 3 liang) Deer Antler Glue (Lu Jiao Jiao) Tortoise Shell Glue (Gui Ban Jiao) Chinese Yam (Shan Yao, 3 liang) Poria (Fu Ling, 2 liang). The deer antler tonifies Yin essence; it is suitable for those with insufficient blood in the left kidney. Jie Zhai said: The left Chi pulse is often deficient, while the right Chi pulse is often vigorous. If both left and right are supplemented simultaneously, fire will still prevail over water. By only supplementing the left and restraining the right, one can achieve a balance between water and fire. In my treatment of conditions involving deficiency of true Yin, I often substitute the deer antler glue with elk antler powder. For ordinary people using it for health maintenance, it should be dissolved in wine.
Prepare the above ingredients into pills the size of paulownia seeds, taken on an empty stomach. Taking them as a decoction paste is also acceptable. For cases where true Yin has failed to hold fast, causing deficient fire to flare upward, a formula that is purely Yin and extremely tranquil is appropriate. For bone-steaming fever, add Cortex Lycii Radicis (Gu Pi, 3 liang). For difficult urination, add Poria (Fu Ling, 3 liang). For dry and constipated stool, remove Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi) and add Cistanche Stem (Rou Cong Rong, 4 liang). For blood deficiency with stagnation, add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui, 4 liang). All five fluids originate from the Kidney; therefore, any herb belonging to the category of nourishing Yin naturally travels to the Kidney. Those who claim that guiding herbs are strictly necessary demonstrate a lack of clear understanding. This formula aims to strengthen the source of Water to cultivate the primordial Yin of the left Kidney. In cases of severe loss of Essence and Qi, decline in age and physical strength, internal deficiency of true Yin, and inability to nourish and irrigate Ying and Wei, leading gradually to emaciation and weakness, even pure tonification may seem insufficient. Adding diuretic herbs like Poria (Fu Ling) and Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie) would inevitably weaken the tonifying power, making efficacy difficult to achieve. Therefore, within this group of Yin-nourishing herbs, we add Tortoise Shell Glue (Gui Ban Jiao) and Deer Antler Glue (Lu Jiao Jiao), taking advantage of their nature as substances of blood and qi, which provide rapid and effective tonification. Zhang Jingyue said: "It was not until middle age that I comprehended the principle of tonifying Yin, so I expanded upon its meaning. Thus, I formulated the Left Restoration Large Decoction (Zuo Gui Da Yin). It adopts the intent of Liuwei Dihuang Wan but does not use its prescription. The efficacy of saving lives with immediate effect cannot be fully described."
The symptoms are the same as mentioned above.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang, 2-3 qian to 1-2 liang) Cornus Fruit (Yu Rou, 1-2 qian, use less if sourness is disliked) Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi, 2 qian, omit if Minister Fire is excessive) Chinese Yam (Shan Yao, 2 qian) Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuan Xiong, 1.5 qian) Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao, 1 qian) Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi, 2 qian, omit if Minister Fire is excessive) Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi, steamed in wine, 2 qian). [Note: The character "Winter" (Dong) appears in the source text without a corresponding herb name, likely a textual error or omission in the original manuscript; translated literally as context implies seasonal adjustment or missing term]. For lung heat with frequent coughing, add Lily Bulb (Bai He, 2 qian). For blood deficiency, add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui, 2 qian). For blood stagnation with heat, add Salvia Root (Dan Shen, 2 qian). For Yin deficiency with restlessness, add Privet Fruit (Nu Zhen Zi, 2 qian). For reckless movement due to blood heat, add Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang, 2 qian). For spleen heat causing easy hunger and excessive sweating damaging Yin, add White Peony Root (Bai Shao, 2 qian). For heart heat with dryness, add Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen, 3 qian). For kidney heat with bone-steaming, add Cortex Lycii Radicis (Gu Pi, 2 qian). For fluid depletion with heat and thirst, add Trichosanthes Root (Hua Fen, 2 qian). For upper excess and lower deficiency, add Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi, 2 qian) to guide the path downward. Adding Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) and Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) to this base formula constitutes Buyuan Jian (Tonify Yuan Decoction).
