Mr. Wang Haicang stated: When pox erupt accompanied by irritability and pain, Muxiang Wuwu Tang (Wood Fragrance Five-Substance Decoction) should be used as the primary treatment. Additionally, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) is ground into powder and mixed with pig bile for topical application. Pain in the posterior body indicates involvement of the Bladder Meridian; Qianghuo Jingjie Gancao Tang (Notopterygium, Schizonepeta, and Licorice Decoction) is prescribed. Pain in the anterior body indicates involvement of the Lung Metal; Shengma Gegen Zicao Tang (Cimicifuga, Pueraria, and Arnebia Decoction) is prescribed. Pain on the sides of the body indicates involvement of the Gallbladder Meridian; Lianqiao Fangfeng Tang (Forsythia and Saposhnikovia Decoction) is prescribed. Pain in the four limbs indicates involvement of the Stomach Meridian; Fangfeng Shaoyao Gancao Tang (Saposhnikovia, Peony, and Licorice Decoction) is prescribed, and it must be treated urgently. This is because one fears that crying out in pain will damage Qi, and enduring pain without relief may impair Blood circulation, leading to complicated syndromes. In cases where heat-toxin is abundant, Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) or Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) should be used. For those who have consumed chicken, fish, wine, or other stimulating foods, Dongyuan Qingwei San (Dongyuan's Stomach-Clearing Powder) and Shengxi Zhi (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Juice) are indicated. If fever is present with a desire for cold drinks but bowel movements are regular, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Lianqiao (Forsythia), and Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark) are used. If fever is present with a desire for cold drinks and constipation, this indicates Excess Heat in the Spleen and Stomach; Qingliang Yin (Cooling and Clearing Decoction) is used. If fever is present with thirst and a desire for hot drinks, this indicates Deficiency Heat in the Spleen and Stomach; Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is used. Generally, during pox, toxic or stimulating foods must be avoided to prevent pain from damaging Yuan Qi (Original Qi); mild cases may worsen, and severe cases may become difficult to treat. The same applies to adults.
A child suffered from painful pox with red lesions and a desire for cold drinks, indicating blazing heat-toxin. After taking two doses of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) powder, the pain ceased. One dose of Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) was then administered, resulting in the resolution of all symptoms and recovery. Without these medicines, conditions would likely deteriorate into Ding Du (carbuncles).
A child suffered from painful pox with bleeding. Examination revealed the mother had Liver Fire. Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was modified with Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) and Shengdi Huang (Rehmannia Root). Both mother and child took it, resulting in immediate improvement. Subsequently, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) was used for complete recovery.
A child suffered from incessant pox pain with pale lesions showing signs of sinking. This indicated pain damaging Yuan Qi (Original Qi). First, one dose of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) stopped the pain. Then, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) was used to promote scabbing.
A woman recovering from an epidemic disease developed pox with fever, fatigue, severe pain, confusion, and a desire for hot drinks. Her pulse was flooding and rapid but thread-like upon deep pressure. Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) was administered with one qian of Cinnabar powder. After two doses, pain ceased immediately, appetite returned, and strength recovered. She continued with the same decoction for over ten doses until cured.
A man suffered from severe pox pain. One dose of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) stopped the pain immediately. One dose of Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) restored his spirit and promoted scabbing.
A child suffered from severe pox pain with a forceful pulse, indicating Excess pathogenic factors. Two qian of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) powder stopped the pain and promoted eruption. Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) was then used to promote scabbing.
A child suffered from red, painful pox. Two qian of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) powder stopped the pain. Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Huangqi (Astragalus), and Jinyinhua (Honeysuckle) were used as the condition improved. Finally, Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), and Shaoyao (Peony) were used to promote scabbing.
A child suffered from red, painful pox with fever, desire for cold drinks, and constipation. The pulse was flooding, rapid, and forceful. One dose of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) modified with Dahuang (Rhubarb) reduced pain immediately. One dose of Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) led to recovery as expected.
A child suffered from red, active, painful pox with thirst and desire for cold drinks, and hot hands and feet. I reasoned this was a case of both form and syndrome being Excess. Only clearing heat and detoxifying could curb the momentum. Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) and Hua Ban Tang (Spot-Dissolving Decoction) were indicated. The patient did not believe this and took Niubangzi Tang (Arctium Decoction) instead. The pox swelled, becoming dark red like ochre. Two doses of the previously mentioned medicines stopped swelling and pain. Niubangzi Tang (Arctium Decoction) was then used for final recovery.
A child suffered from painful pox after taking Niubangzi Tang (Arctium Decoction). Three Ding Du (carbuncles) formed, causing great suffering. Garlic-partitioned moxibustion was applied, and Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) was taken. Pain ceased, and suppuration occurred. Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Detoxification Powder) was then used to promote scabbing.
A child had fever all over the body, especially in the legs, with thirst and a desire for hot drinks. The pulse was flooding, rapid, and deficient. This indicated congenital Deficiency Heat of the Kidney Meridian. Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) formula was modified with Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Huangqi (Astragalus). Large doses were prepared for frequent consumption over three days. After several doses, fever and thirst ceased completely. Several more doses led to full recovery.
A child suffered from hot, painful pox and took cooling/blood-cooling drugs. Carbuncles developed on the four limbs with alternating chills and fever, and thirst. I advised tonifying Yuan Qi (Original Qi). The patient refused and died.
Muxiang Wuwu Tang (Wood Fragrance Five-Substance Decoction) treats irritability and pain following pox eruption.
Qingmuxiang (Aquilaria Agallocha Wood), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Xunluxiang (Frankincense), Baijian (Alumen), each 1 liang; Qingmuxiang 4 liang; Shexiang (Moschus) 1 qian.
Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water. Add Xijiao (Rhinoceronis Cornu) 1 liang if heat is severe. This formula is commonly used by Shi Yintai with miraculous effects.
Niubangzi Tang (Arctium Decoction) treats pox that are about to erupt but not fully transparent, skin fever, red eyes with irritability, and sore throat. (Removing Digupi and Fangfeng yields Xiaodu San/Detoxification Powder).
Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) 4 qian (stir-fried and crushed), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 2 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 5 fen, Digupi (Lycii Cortex) 1 qian.
Grind into powder. Take 1-2 qian per dose, mixed with warm water.
Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) treats painful pox. It rapidly reduces severity in excess heat cases and cures weak cases. It is truly a sacred medicine.
