Infants should not be fed solid food immediately after breastfeeding, nor should they be breastfed immediately after eating. If milk and food are ingested simultaneously, digestion becomes difficult, leading to conditions such as *pi ji* (accumulation masses) and *gan kuai* (malnutrition masses), which originate from this cause; treat with *Xiaoshi San* (Digestion-Dispersing Powder) (formula see below).
If an infant frequently flows clear saliva, it is named "Zhi Yi" (Saliva Retention), which indicates the onset of roundworms in the stomach; treat with *Kulian Gen Tang* (Fructus Toosendan Decoction) (formula see below).
The period of "Bian Zheng" (Physiological Growth and Development) in infants is a time when spirit increases and perception develops. Symptoms may include sweating, vomiting, irritability, crying, and slight palpitations, resembling *Shang Han* (Cold Damage disease). Mild cases last five or six days, severe cases seven or eight days. The treatment method should use mild agents; treat primarily with *Xingxing San* (Awakening Star Powder) (formula see below).
If an infant suddenly feels cold, has fever, lethargy, slight head sweating, and symptoms occur either every other day or daily, this indicates signs of *Nuo Mu* (Malaria Mother); treat with *Chaihu Qinggan Tang* (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Decoction) (formula see below).
Before weaning, if the mother is pregnant, the milk may cause the infant to become yellow and thin, suffering from illness resembling malaria or dysentery, named "Bu Lu Bing" (Nursing Illness). Hang a red gauze bag containing *Yeming Sha* (Cacumen Phoenicis) for the infant to wear.
Another method: Burn bats to ash, grind finely, and let the infant take 3 fen mixed with rice gruel, three to four times a day for best results.
If an infant is emaciated but the abdomen is full, with green veins covering the abdomen, this is a sign of *Pi Gan* (Spleen Malnutrition); treat with *Fei'er Wan* (Child-Nourishing Pills) (formula see below).
If an infant's neck and limbs are stiff and cannot bend, or feel numb and lifeless, this is caused by wind and dampness invasion leading to Qi and Blood stagnation. This may eventually develop into *Zhong Feng* (Wind Stroke), which is concerning, and requires urgent treatment. Sudden weakness in the lower body, sitting on the ground unable to move, is caused by Dampness invasion; treat with *Liujun Wan* (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) (formula see below).
Overlapping toes in infants indicate gradual Wind pathogen invasion; treat according to the meridians. The first toe belongs to the Liver and Spleen, the second to the Stomach, the third to the Kidney, the fourth to the Gallbladder, and the fifth to the Bladder. If the toe belonging to the Liver/Spleen overlaps the toe belonging to the Stomach, use formulas treating Wind-Dampness of the Liver and Spleen. (Acupuncture is avoided as it may damage Yuan Qi, and weak Qi cannot guide the pathogen; use *Qufeng Tang* (Wind-Expelling Decoction). Formula see below.)
Infants fond of playing with knives often injure their fingers. If bleeding is excessive (injury to collateral vessels at the fingertips causes unceasing blood flow), immediately apply mashed *Dahuang* (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) to the wound.
Another method: Apply mashed medicinal mugwort (*Ai Ye*).
Another method: Apply horse manure; *Xuexie* (Resina Draconis) is even better.
For facial nose-lip injuries from falls where blood does not stop, use the same treatment as above.
For epistaxis due to Lung Heat, plug the nostrils with *Wu Ai* (Artemisia argyi), drip cold water on the back of the head, until bleeding stops.
Another method: Lightly stir-fry *Puhuang* (Pollen Typhae) about 1 qian, grind with *Shanzhizi* (Fructus Gardeniae), stir-fry with dry juice to 2 qian, decoct in water and drink; bleeding stops immediately. This is also suitable for bleeding from the nine orifices.
If swelling or knife wounds are dry without moisture (check wounds frequently), accompanied by cold body and irregular breathing, these are signs of *Poshang Feng* (Tetanus); immediately cover the wound thickly with fresh human feces and moxa-burn above it, until fluid exudes from the wound.
Another method: Decoct *Zitan Xiang* (Lignum Santali Rubrum) with honey and take warm.
Another method: Decoct *Huang La* (Cera Flava) in clear wine and take.
Another method: Juice of *Quanshe* (Trimeresurus stejnegeri) is extremely effective.
If the skin of the external genitalia of an infant rots and peels off, leaving only the two testes suspended, this is injury from damp environments. Apply white early rice flour to the testes and wrap with green lotus leaves; the skin will regenerate as before.
Absence of testes in the external genitalia is due to *Shan Qi* (Hernia) rising and pulling the testes into the abdominal cavity. Mix equal parts of *Huixiang* (Fructus Foeniculi) (ground, stir-fried with pig bile), *Chuanlian Rou* (Pericarpium Toosendan) (stir-fried), and *Wuyao* (Radix Linderae) (peeled, soaked in wine, washed) into pills; taking them is excellent. Moxa-burning *Zhubin* acupoint (located 3 cun above the medial malleolus on the Kidney Meridian) is very effective for hernia. Three moxa cones for one-to-four-year-olds, five cones for four-year-olds.
If a wound in an infant closes superficially before granulation tissue forms, it is due to Wind invasion. Later, it may become painful or numb, transforming into *Feng Pi* (Wind Spleen) syndrome; pre-emptively administer *Shufeng Tang* (Wind-Dispersing Decoction) (formula see below).
Additionally, puncture the previously closed wound with a needle and apply a cake made of fried *Xionghuang* (Realgar) and salt.
Excessive sweating and wetness in the external genitalia, anus, and inner thighs of infants, often soaked in urine and feces, rarely stay dry, resulting in redness. This predisposes to *Tai Du* (Embryonic Toxin), *Dan Du* (Erysipelas), or ulceration, all of which are concerning. Inspect frequently, wash with warm water to remove dampness. Do not let the child sit in water for long periods. Cold wind penetrating warm water can lead to convulsions, which is dangerous. Add pig bile to bath water to prevent sores.
Infantile hernia where the scrotum swells like a goose egg (commonly called Wang Lang): Decoct *Bi Wutong Pi* (Cortex Firmianaee) and wash warmly; the hernia will subside naturally (also effective for dysentery). Effective for adults too.
For retracted penis, take 5 qian each of *Huang* (Sulfur) and *Wuzhuyu* (Fructus Evodiae), grind to powder, mix with garlic juice, and apply to the umbilicus and abdomen. Smoke with burning *Shechuangzi* (Fructus Cnidii) gently.
For sudden swelling and rotting of the glans due to Damp-Heat, wash frequently with decoction of *Shechuangzi* (Fructus Cnidii) and apply chicken egg yolk oil; this is most effective. Alternatively, apply earthworm dung mixed with onion juice.
For gangrenous injury to the penis that is difficult to heal internally, mix equal parts of *Danfan* (Alumen), *Lilu* (Radix Veratri Nigri), *Huandan* (Minium), and *Haiercha* (Camellia Seed Tea) into powder, mix with clear liquid and apply to promote tissue regeneration. (Effective for adults too).
Another method: Applying snake gall is effective.
Another method: Mix equal parts of *Wuju Sheng* (Stem Lactucae Scabrae), *Mutong* (Caulis Akebiae), *Zhiqiao* (Fructus Aurantii), and *Huangjushasha* (Flower Chrysanthemi Indici) into powder, mix with clear liquid and apply; miraculous effect. (Effective for various unnamed malignant sores).
For newborns with anal membrane obstruction, perforate with a needle or gold/jade hairpin tip. Insert a suppository made of *Suhe Wan* (Styrax Pill) into the hole; do not allow it to close again.
If an infant suffers unbearable pain during urination with dribbling, it is due to a small urethral opening. Press and guide the foreskin manually to widen the opening naturally; otherwise, puncturing with a needle is acceptable.
If the opening is not small, it is a sign of *Lin Ji* (Strangury). Take 5-6 pigeon brains, combine with de-jointed *Mutong* (Caulis Akebiae), and drink continuously on an empty stomach with tea for 3-4 times; miraculous effect.
Constipation in infants is caused by excess heat and dry stools. Drink several spoons of sesame oil, 3-4 times a day; lubricating the intestines facilitates bowel movement. (In cold weather, consume warmed sesame oil). Insert a 5-6 fen piece of white *Shanglu* (Radix Menispermi) into the anus to induce defecation.
Another method: Consume *Zhusha* (Cinnabar) (water-ground) mixed with clear liquid; passage occurs immediately.
Urinary retention is also caused by Damp-Heat stagnation. Apply garlic cake to the umbilicus; urination resumes immediately.
Another method: Take 1 cun of white part of green onion, split into four, decoct with milk, and instill into the mouth using a sand vessel; effective immediately.
Floating deficiency heat causing oral erosion or sores: Grind *Kufan* (Alumen) and *Huangbai* (Cortex Phellodendri) into powder, mix with clear liquid and sprinkle on lesions. For dental *Gan* (Malnutrition), first wipe the lesion with white salt to drain toxic blood, then sprinkle *Renzhongbai* (Urinae Calcina) and *Huangbai* (Cortex Phellodendri) powder until healed. Floating gas appearing suddenly inside/outside nostrils, lips, under tongue, or palate indicates similar malnutrition-type sores; treat as above.
Another method: Shape *Baimu Pi* (Cortex Platycladi) like a horseshoe, roast over fire until oil exudes, and cauterize the lesion; extremely effective.
Another method: Grind dried soil mouse meat into powder, mix with clear liquid and apply; excellent.
Another method: Apply snake gall.
Another method: Apply mixture of *Han Shui Shi* (Aqua Halloysitae) and white salt in clear liquid; also effective.
If the uvula prevents suckling, sprinkle white clear liquid mixed with salt.
For floating pain or ulceration of the throat: Decoct *Xuanshen* (Radix Scrophulariae), *Jiegeng* (Radix Platycodonis), and *Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (7-8 fen each) and drink. Moxa-burn both ear tips three cones each; miraculous effect. (Effective for adults too).
Wind invasion at the umbilical stump, ulcers, or sudden protrusion named "Xuan Luo" (Whirlwind Screw): Decoct *Jingjie Sui* (Spica Schizonepetae) and *Ai Ye* (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) and wash frequently. Burn *Wangbuliuxing* (Semen Vaccariae) to retain nature, mix with father's shed scales and wax oil for application. Prevents umbilical wind and abdominal pain after cord separation.
Another method: Mix *Shi Xionghuang* (Realgar) and *Ruxiang* (Resina Boswelliae) with sesame oil for application. For umbilical ulcers, apply *Miecan Gao* (Scar-Extinguing Ointment); miraculous effect (formula see below).
Hoarseness and voice loss due to Wind-Cold invasion that persists: Take *Qinyin San* (Voice-Clearing Powder) frequently until healed (formula see below).
After cord separation, make a dough cake around the umbilicus and moxa-burn three cones to prevent Umbilical Wind.
Phlegm rales in the throat indicate Qi deficiency, potentially leading to phlegm accumulation or phlegm syncope. Decoct *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng), *Huanglian* (Rhizoma Coptidis), *Beimu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), and *Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (2-3 fen each) and drink (add *Yanhusuo* if needed). *Fei'er Wan* (Child-Nourishing Pills) is also indicated.
Living in overly warm environments dries the blood and damages Yuan Qi, causing sallow complexion, lethargy, and lack of energy. Take *Shengge Tang* (Kudzu and Cimicifuga Decoction) (*Gegen* 2 qian, *Shengma* 1 qian, *Baishao* 1 qian, *Gancao* 0.5 qian) plus *Danggui Shen* (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 1 qian and *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) 0.3 fen. This resolves muscle heat and replenishes fluids.
Syncope due to summerheat: Immediately take hot soil from the road mixed with *Tongbian* (Children's Urine), strain, and instill into the mouth. For intestinal colic (treat as above). For severe summerheat-cold complex symptoms, *Xiaochaihu Tang* (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is excellent. For various summerheat injuries, *Shengmai San* (Generate Pulse Powder) (*Maidong* 3 qian, *Renshen* 1 qian, *Wuweizi* 9 grains, ground) is indicated.
Sudden bilateral eye swelling preventing opening, with turbid discharge, is due to Damp-Heat injury. Take *Xieqing Wan* (Drain Green Pill) plus *Beimu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) and *Caojueming* (Semen Cassiae) (3-4 fen each), *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) and *Sangbaipi* (Cortex Mori Radicis) (2-3 fen each) as a decoction.
Eye injury from blunt force with blood stasis, pain, and pterygium formation: Scrape *Shuiqingmu Pi* (Bark of Water Green Tree), soak in water to cool, and wash frequently. Decoct *Huanglian* (Rhizoma Coptidis) in water, mix with colostrum (white goat milk is especially effective), instill before sleep, and concurrently take *Qingke San* (Light Cough Powder) (formula see below).
Sudden massive eyelid swelling like a fist with bulging eyes is due to ascending Spleen-Stomach Damp-Heat and nodulation. Take *Pingwei San* (Peace the Middle Powder) plus *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum) and *Caojueming* (Semen Cassiae) (7-8 fen each) or *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) 3 fen.
Nasal congestion preventing feeding: Mix equal parts of *Zhuya Zaojiao* (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) and *Caowu* (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii) (processed with ginger) into powder, mix with onion juice to form a paste, and apply to the anterior fontanelle.
Another method: Apply *Nanxing* (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) powder mixed with ginger juice to the anterior fontanelle.
Nasal polyps indicate Lung Heat. Moxa-burn *Shangxing* acupoint (1 cun above anterior hairline) five or seven cones.
Another method: Remove oil from *Badou* (Semen Crotonis), grind to powder, wrap in paper tube, insert into nostril. Wait until yellow fluid drains out until clear; nasal passage clears and polyps disappear. Badou is highly toxic; ensure no residue touches nasal mucosa.
Constant turbid discharge is named "Bi Yuan" (Nasal Sinusitis), indicating brain depletion (treat as above). Concurrently use *Fangfeng Tang* (Saposhnikovia Decoction) (formula see below). Clear rhinorrhea is treated similarly.
Chronic purulent otorrhea leading to deafness is difficult to treat. Instill juice of raw *Yinxing* (Semen Ginkgo) (grind dry ginkgo with vinegar and sesame oil) with a little *Shexiang* (Moschus).
Another method: Instill dry or cotton rouge mixed with carp bile; also effective. Modify *Fangfeng Tongsheng San* (Saposhnikovia Unblocking Interior and Exterior Powder) (formula see below) for administration; miraculous effect.
Urticaria recurring before varicella/chickenpox is due to exterior heat夹杂着 Wind-Damp. Pre-emptively take *Shengge Tang* (Kudzu and Cimicifuga Decoction) (see above) to prevent worsening during eruption. Macules/rashes are due to severe Heat-Toxin. Add *Lianqiao* (Fructus Forsythiae), *Fangfeng* (Radix Saposhnikoviae), *Niubangzi* (Fructus Arctii) (5-6 fen each). White rashes are due to Qi deficiency with excess heat. Add *Qianghuo* (Rhizoma Notopterygii), *Cangzhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae), *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) (5-6 fen each).
Relocation causing水土不服 (local incompatibility) disrupts intestines, causing sudden phlegm-fluid accumulation, transforming into phlegm accumulation or syncope. Take equal parts of *Yiyiren* (Semen Coicis), *Jiegeng* (Radix Platycodonis), *Baifuling* (Poria), and *Beimu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) with a little dried ginger, brew as tea, and drink regularly.
Another method: Decoct self-grown fungus on live locust wood; most effective for local incompatibility.
Swallowing grain awns: Drink goose or dog saliva (suspend goose/dog by one leg to induce salivation). Fish bone stuck in mouth: Cover mouth with fish net while drinking water to dislodge bone. Burn fish net to ash, mix with water and drink. Bone stuck in neck: Apply ginger cake (lightly roasted) to side of neck; replace when cool; bone pops out. Deep bone in extremities: Apply hickory nut cake to opposite side; bone pops out (do not apply directly over insertion point). Rose root decoction immersion for skin/muscle splinters. For sole splinters submerged in water, apply hickory cake method to dorsum foot. Lead/iron splinters: Same method. Another method: Apply *Shihua* (Corallium) to opposite side. Needle embedded in muscle: Apply lodestone to draw it out. Another method: Apply crushed mantis with musk. Anterior mantis applied to entry site, posterior to opposite site.
Insect in ear canal: Use bamboo tube to suction insect out. Another method: Instill sesame oil to kill insect, then remove. Large bean in ear: Tie string coated with gelatin to end, insert into ear, wait, and pull out; object adheres and exits.
Child bite: Burn turtle shell or softshell turtle carapace to ash, mix with sesame oil and apply. Another method: Apply sticky rice. Rabies bite: Moxa-burn seven cones initially, then one cone daily up to 100 cones.
Another method: Tiger bone powder mixed with wine. Another method: *Banmao* (Mylabris) (remove head/wings/legs), stir-fry to powder, mix with warm wine. Men drink from behind shoulder; toxin exits via stool. Drinking from front causes toxin to exit via urine with severe pain (toxin takes physical form). Another method: *Gegen* (Radix Puerariae) 2-3 qian, *Xingren* (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 7-8 fen, decoct and drink.
Cat bite: Chew mint and apply. Snake bite: Prick wound randomly with needle, drain toxic blood daily until healed. Another method: Apply pork to bite and eat. During severe varicella/chickenpox eruption, pre-emptively administer *Xidou Tu Hong Wan* (Varicella-Thinning Rabbit Red Pill) and *Renshen Baidu San* (Ginseng Detoxification Powder) (see below) to prevent critical complications.
*Niu Huang Bao Long Wan* (Calculus Bovis Dragon-Embracing Pill) is a good remedy for infant ailments. Safe to take consecutively before resolution of Fire Erysipelas or Convulsions, and for prevention before illness. However, overdosing (7-8 pills within 1-2 months) causes sudden cold intestines/stomach and acute cold-phlegm, which is dangerous. Must balance with *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng), *Baizhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), *Beimu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), and *Rougui* (Cortex Cinnamomi) (3-4 fen each).
The Classics state: "Great Fire consumes Qi." Also: "Fire and Yuan Qi cannot coexist; as one wins, the other loses." Infant diseases stem primarily from Fire-Heat. The fragile Qi line cannot withstand consumption. How can it avoid being eaten by Fire? Unless *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) tonifies deficiency and restores Yuan Qi, there is no power to restore order. Some say Renshen aids heat and is contraindicated in heat syndromes; this is erroneous reasoning. The Classics state: "Even severe heat does not cause death." Commentary: "Death occurs when Qi is exhausted." Thus, death from heat disease is due to Qi exhaustion, not heat severity. When Metal prospers in Earth, Wood declines and Fire retreats. Families caring for infants must use Renshen (Radix Ginseng) as a guide to assess deficiency/excess and use it judiciously.
