Irritable disposition with frequent crying, sweating accompanied by body heat, frequent startles during sleep and wakefulness, obstruction of both urination and defecation, slight discomfort leading to a sensation of bodily heat, and a preference for drinking water.
A gentle disposition with a weak voice, the whole body appearing normal, but dampness at the back of the neck, night sweats with cold sweat, loose and frequent stools, presenting as upper heat and lower cold, erosion inside the mouth, susceptibility to various types of *gan* syndrome (malnutrition in children), frequent vomiting of milk and drooling, often with phlegm sounds in the throat, frequent belching, and stool that is greenish-white.
Immediately after birth, take 1 qian of Gancao (Licorice Root) and 5 fen of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), decoct in water, wrap a finger with cloth, dip into the liquid, and wipe the foul fluid from the infant's mouth. Also, administer the decoction of these two herbs to drink. This allows the infant to vomit out the turbid water from the abdomen or pass foul matter in the stool, ensuring no miscellaneous diseases occur and facilitating the eruption of smallpox/variolae. (Adding 1-2 fen of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) for simultaneous decoction is excellent.)
Another prescription: Take 1 zi amount of Zhusha (Cinnabar), mix with refined honey, apply to the infant's mouth to swallow; this prevents variolae (smallpox) for life.
Immediately after birth, soak cotton wool extensively in maternal blood (Chanxue), dry it in the shade without allowing it to rot, and store it in a cool place. If the infant's qi becomes temporarily unsmooth, manifesting as oral heat and warm skin, soak the cotton wool in warm water, wring it out, and frequently feed the water to the infant to treat various ailments. It is said that blood from the umbilical cord is even better.
Take dog feces exposed to dew until dry. Select those that are white in color, roast with honey, grind into powder, steep in boiling water, filter out the dregs, and frequently administer warm doses. This prevents slow convulsions, acute convulsions, erysipelas (huodan), fetal swelling, and oral gan syndrome.
After the umbilical cord falls off post-birth, place it on a new tile and burn it with charcoal fire around the perimeter until the smoke almost ceases. Remove it to the ground and cover with a tile to preserve its nature. Grind into powder. Prepare fine powder of transparent Zhusha (Cinnabar) using the water-calcination method. Mix 5 fen of umbilical cord powder with 2.5 fen of Zhusha. Decoct Shengdi (Rehmannia Root) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) thickly to obtain one or two shells of a small clam. Mix these three ingredients and administer to the infant, consuming within one day. The next day, foul matter will be passed in the stool, preventing variolae and all diseases for life. This is the premier miraculous formula for prolonging life.
In some cases, infants die immediately upon birth. Urgently examine the area anterior to the uvula in the mouth for bubbles resembling pomegranate seeds. Puncture them with a finger to induce bleeding, wipe with cloth, and sprinkle hair ash. If foul blood enters the mouth, death occurs immediately.
If an infant is born with extremely weak qi, unable to cry, it is likely due to injury during difficult labor or exposure to cold. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wool and hold them against your chest. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet. Place the placenta in the stove fire to burn, and wash the umbilical cord with vinegar soup or mugwort soup, allowing the fumes to enter the infant's abdomen. Once qi returns and crying resumes normally, the umbilical cord may then be cut.
Another prescription: Decoct Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Wuyao (Lindera Root), each 2-3 fen, and drip into the infant's mouth; this is also effective.
If an infant is born with a cyan face, cold body, and locked jaw, it is caused by the mother consuming excessive raw, cold, or yin-cold foods before delivery, transferring cold qi to the fetus. Urgently decoct Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Gancao (Licorice Root), each 2-3 fen, and administer to the infant.
If an infant vomits and cannot suckle milk, it is caused by foul and turbid water entering the mouth and abdomen. Decoct Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhijiao (Zanthoxylum Bark), Chifuling (Poria with Red Cortex), and Gancao (Licorice Root), each 2-3 fen, mix with honey, and administer.
If an infant is born with white debris covering the tongue, unable to suckle, it is called "Goat Mouth" (E kou, thrush). Urgently wrap loose hair around a finger, dip in Bohe (Mint) juice or well water, and wipe the mouth. If it does not detach, grind Xionghuang (Realgar), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Gancao (Licorice Root) in equal parts into powder, mix with honey, and apply to the mouth.
Another prescription: Apply juice from Shufu (Woodlouse) to the affected area.
Another prescription: Apply sap from Baiyangzhi (Populus alba branch); this is miraculously effective.
If an infant is born without skin, showing only red flesh, sprinkle Baizaomi (Early Rice Flour) over it until skin regenerates. (Baizaomi refers to early rice flour).
If an infant is born with blisters all over the body resembling fish bladders or crystal, which burst and leak fluid, sprinkle Miduoseng (Lead Monoxide) powder. (If unavailable, use Baizaomi). This is treated because Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) was administered (formula see below).
If an infant is born unable to suckle due to "horse teeth" (Ma ya, Epstein pearls) formed in the mouth, scrape the swollen nodules with a needle and apply Baiqing (White Clear/Calcined Gypsum). This is effective. (If Baiqing is unavailable, Shengqing [Raw Gypsum] can be used; if untreated, death is certain).
If an infant is born with tight, small lips that cannot open, it is called "Silkworm Cocoon Lip" (Jian chun). Grind Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), and Gancao (Licorice Root) in equal parts into powder, mix with Baiqing (White Clear), and apply.
Another prescription: Administer Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) mixed with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap); this is most excellent. If not treated urgently, death is certain.
