After new childbirth, rich and greasy foods (Gao Liang) should be prohibited, and strong-flavored, cloying foods should be avoided. If dietary habits are not regulated, the Spleen and Stomach will inevitably be injured. Treatment should focus on supporting the Primordial Qi (Yuan Qi), warming and tonifying Qi and Blood, and strengthening the Spleen and Stomach. One must ascertain what food was overconsumed and add various digestive and guiding herbs accordingly. In Shenghua Tang (Life-Birth Decoction), add Qu Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) and Mai Ya (Malt) to digest wheat products; add Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit) and Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) to digest meat; if cold foods were consumed, add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark); if the postpartum mother is extremely deficient, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). If blood stasis masses exist, then treat by simultaneously resolving stasis and tonifying deficiency; there will be no instability. It is frequently observed that practitioners do not emphasize the weakness of the postpartum state, but only know how to rapidly eliminate food stagnation, which instead damages the True Qi and exacerbates fullness and oppression. Can one not be cautious!
Jiawei Shenghua Tang (Modified Life-Birth Decoction): Treats cases where blood stasis masses have not yet resolved; take this decoction to aid digestion.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (5 qian), Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger) (4 fen), Zhi Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (5 fen), Tao Ren (Prunus Persica Seed) (10 grains).
Inquire about what food was overconsumed, and apply additions as described above; decoct and take orally.
Jianpi Xiaoshi Shenghua Tang (Spleen-Strengthening Digestion-Assisting Life-Birth Decoction): Treats cases where blood stasis masses have been eliminated; take this decoction to aid digestion.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (1 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (each 2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (1.5 qian), Zhi Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (5 fen).
Ascertain what food was overconsumed, and apply additions as described above. If cold foods have remained stagnant for a long time and the Spleen and Stomach are weak, it is feared that the medicine may not be effectively metabolized; in such cases, abdominal massage or hot compresses with fried Qu Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) can be used, which is even more effective. For those who have suffered from food stagnation and mistakenly used digestive herbs, resulting in an inability to consume porridge for several days, this formula is suitable.
Verse: After new childbirth, prohibit rich and greasy foods; unregulated diet injures the Spleen and Stomach.
Treatment should support the Yuan Qi and tonify Qi and Blood; ascertain the ingested food to adjust the prescription.
For postpartum food stagnation, use Shenghua Tang; for wheat products, Shenqu and Malt are beneficial.
For meat injury, use Amomum and Hawthorn; for cold foods, Evodia and Cinnamon; for extreme deficiency, Ginseng and Atractylodes may also be tried.
Postpartum anger causes Qi rebellion, leading to discomfort in the chest and diaphragm, and pain from blood stasis masses. It is appropriate to use Shenghua Tang (Life-Birth Decoction) removing Tao Ren (Prunus Persica Seed); when taking the medicine, grind in 2 fen of Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) into the decoction. This will resolve the mass and dissipate the anger without conflict. If one neglects the postpartum weakness while focusing on Qi stagnation, and predominantly uses herbs like Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root), Wu Yao (Lindera Root), Zhi Ke (Aurantium Fruit), and Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit), the Primordial Qi will be damaged, further increasing fullness and oppression. Additionally, eating immediately after anger, with weak Stomach function causing stagnation and oppression, requires ascertaining the specific food; the treatment method is as described above. Do not use formulas containing Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root), Bing Lang Wan (Areca Nut Pill), or Liu Qi Yin Zi (Flowing-Qi Inducing Formula), as these will worsen the deficiency.
Mu Xiang Shenghua Tang (Vladimiria Life-Birth Decoction): Treats postpartum cases where blood stasis masses have been eliminated due to emotional constraint (Qi stagnation).
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (6 qian), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) (3 fen), Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger) (4 fen).
When taking the medicine, grind in 2 fen of Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) into the decoction. This formula removes Tao Ren (Prunus Persica Seed) and adds Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) and Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel). Previously, there was mention of removing Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), which requires detailed verification.
Jianpi Huashi Sanqi Tang (Spleen-Strengthening Food-Dissolving Qi-Scattering Decoction): Treats cases of Qi stagnation and food stagnation without blood stasis pain.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (2 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (1 qian), Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger) (4 fen), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (2 qian), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) (3 qian).
Ascertain what food was overconsumed, and apply additions as described above. Generally, for postpartum anger-induced Qi rebellion and food stagnation, skilled practitioners prioritize the postpartum condition over treating anger and food stagnation. They must first tonify Qi and Blood, assisting with Liver-soothing and Qi-regulating methods so that anger and depression dissipate without damaging the Yuan Qi; they assist with Spleen-strengthening and digestive methods so that food stagnation resolves and appetite returns. If one solely focuses on regulating Qi and digesting food, it is not only ineffective but harmful.
Marginal Note: Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) is recorded as 3 fen in another version. There is also Zhi Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) at 4 fen; keep for reference.
Verse: Postpartum anger causes rebellion in the chest and diaphragm; for blood stasis pain, use Shenghua Tang.
It is appropriate to remove Tao Ren (Prunus Persica Seed) and add Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root); mass resolution and anger dispersion ensure no disaster.
Jianpi Huashi Sanqi Tang contains Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger).
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) can tonify Qi; depression and anger dissipate without injuring Qi.
