Immediately after childbirth, a woman suddenly experiences blurred vision, nausea with an urge to vomit, mental restlessness and lack of inner stability, or her spirit and soul seem to wander outward, feeling as if floating like clouds in the sky. People often attribute this to the affliction of "evil blood rushing to the heart" (E Xue Chong Xin), but little do they know that it is actually caused by Qi deficiency approaching collapse!
Generally, after recent childbirth, a woman's blood is inevitably largely depleted, leaving the Blood Chamber (Xue Shi) empty, with only a trace of Qi remaining; if the individual has inherently deficient Yang Qi, unable to generate blood, the blood within the Heart (Xin) that previously nourished the fetus, along with the fetus itself, is expelled upon delivery. With the Heart lacking blood nourishment, it relies solely on this faint Qi for consolidation. Now, since the Qi is also deficient and on the verge of collapse, the remaining residual blood cannot return to its vessels, resulting in the syndrome of Blood Fainting (Xue Yun). The treatment method must involve massive tonification of both Qi and Blood; one must absolutely not treat only the Blood Fainting. Some may suspect that Blood Fainting is caused by hot blood rushing upward, and thus attempt to further tonify blood, thereby inadvertently aiding the upward-rushing momentum. However, they fail to realize that without generating new blood, old blood will not disperse; tonifying blood to generate new blood is precisely the means to invigorate blood and expel old blood. Since blood is a tangible substance, it is difficult to generate rapidly, whereas Qi is intangible and easily stimulated swiftly. Therefore, tonifying Qi to generate blood is even more effective than directly tonifying blood to generate blood.
The formula used is Buqi Jun Tang (Qi-Tonifying Decoction for Resolving Fainting).
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang)
Sheng Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang)
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, not washed with wine)
Hei Jie Sui (Charred Schizonepetae Spica, 3 qian)
Jiang Tan (Charred Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the fainting ceases. After two doses, the mind settles. After three doses, blood is generated. After four doses, blood becomes abundant, and fainting does not recur. This is a sacred medicine for resolving fainting: Ren Shen and Huang Qi are used to tonify Qi, making Qi robust to generate blood; Dang Gui is used to tonify Blood, making Blood abundant to nourish Qi. When both Qi and Blood are abundant, the mind naturally settles. Charred Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) is used to guide blood back into the vessels, and Jiang Tan is used to move stasis and guide Yang; once the stasis is removed, healthy blood returns to its course. Without specifically targeting the fainting, the symptom resolves itself. Within this single formula, there are only five herbs, yet their miraculous efficacy is so profound—how divine!
Marginal Note: The original formula is extremely effective and should not be modified.
Verse:
When a woman has just given birth,
Sudden blood fainting causes blurred vision.
Nausea and vomiting with mental unrest,
Do not mistake Qi deficiency nearing collapse.
Use Ren Shen in Buqi Jun Tang,
Along with Hei Jing Jie, Jiang Tan, and Dang Gui Shen.
When Qi and Blood are abundant, the mind settles naturally,
Four doses bring complete recovery, avoiding danger.
