Sweating during sleep after childbirth, which stops upon waking, is like a thief stealing while the person sleeps, hence termed *Dao Han* (Night Sweats), distinct from spontaneous sweating. The *Za Zheng Lun* states: "Spontaneous sweating indicates Yang deficiency; night sweats indicate Yin deficiency."
However, Danggui Liuhuang Tang is not the formula for treating night sweats after childbirth. Only by simultaneously regulating Qi and Blood can one achieve the appropriate treatment.
Zhihan San (Stop-Sweating Powder): Treats night sweats after childbirth.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (2 qian) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian) Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (1.5 qian) Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Herba Cum Radice) (5 fen) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (5 fen, stir-fried with wine) Fuxiaomai (Floating Wheat) (a large handful) Zao (Jujubae Fructus) (1 piece).
Another prescription:
Muli (Ostreae Concha) (finely powdered, 5 fen) Xiaomaimian (Tritici Aestivae Farina) (stir-fried until yellow, powdered).
Marginal note: Another version stir-fries Muli and Xiaomai until yellow, takes 5 fen of each, and mixes with water to take on an empty stomach.
Rhyme: Night sweats occur during sleep after childbirth, stopping upon waking with body fatigue.
This is often due to Yin deficiency allowing pathogenic factors to act; one must simultaneously regulate Qi and Blood and employ astringents.
For postpartum night sweats, use Zhihan San, containing Renshen, Danggui, and Chuan Huanglian.
Shudi, Fuxiaomai, and Mahuang Gen are used, or alternatively Muli and Xiaomaimian.
Restlessness, dry throat, thirst, and difficulty in urination after childbirth are caused by blood loss and excessive sweating. Treatment should assist the Spleen and benefit the Lung, raising Qi and Blood. Thus, Yang rises and Yin descends; water enters the meridians to transform into Blood and fluids; grain enters the Stomach, increasing Gu Qi and promoting pulse circulation. Naturally, fluids are generated and urination becomes smooth. If one mistakes thirst for Fire and uses Huangqin, Huanglian, Zhizi, and Huangbai to drain it; or mistakes difficult urination for Water stagnation and uses Wuling San to promote diuresis, these are all erroneous treatments. One must warm and tonify according to the exhaustion, and moisten and promote movement according to the stagnation. This would be appropriate.
Shengjin Zhike Yishui Yin (Fluid-Generating and Thirst-Relieving Water-Nourishing Drink):
Renshen Maidong Danggui Shengdi (each 3 qian) Huangqi (1 qian) Gegen (1 qian) Shengma Zhigancao (each 4 fen) Fuling (8 fen) Wuweizi (15 grains).
If sweating is excessive, add Mahuang Gen (1 qian) and Fuxiaomai (a large handful); if stool is dry, add Rongzhu (1.5 qian); if thirst is severe, add Shengmai San; do not hesitate to use it.
Rhyme: Postpartum thirst and dry throat, what causes difficult urination?
Blood loss and excessive sweating are the original causes; assisting the Spleen and benefiting the Lung yields extraordinary effects.
Fluid-generating and thirst-relieving Yishui Yin contains Maidong, Danggui, and Renshen.
Shengdi, Fuling, and Wuweizi, along with Shengma, Zhigancao, and Gegen.
