For individuals with chronic deficiency, whose breath is faint, it is universally believed that urgent treatment is required. However, one must not realize that when Qi and Blood are severely deficient, suddenly administering potent tonifying agents may exceed the body's capacity to bear them, inevitably leading to increased gastric distension and discomfort. It is preferable to employ a slow and mild tonification method. The prescription is as follows:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) - 1 qian; Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) - 2 qian; Fuling (Poria) - 1 qian; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) - 5 fen; Renshen (Radix Ginseng) - 3 fen; Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) - 1 qian; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) - 3 fen; Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) - 3 fen; Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) - 3 fen; Zaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) - 5 fen; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) - 3 fen.
Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies in using Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) as the sovereign drug, guiding Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) into the Liver channel as assisting drugs. Through gentle action, it gradually achieves its effect, allowing Spleen Qi to become solid and the stomach appetite to open. Only then should pure tonifying agents be used; initially, slow tonification is appropriate.
A large pulse on the right hand indicates injury to the Qi aspect. Use Buqi Wan (Qi-Tonifying Pill):
Renshen (Radix Ginseng) - 3 liang; Huangqi (Radix Astragali) - 3 liang; Fuling (Poria) - 4 liang; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) - 8 liang; Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) - 3 liang; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) - 1 liang; Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) - 8 qian; Maimai Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis) - 3 liang; Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) - 1 liang; Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) - 1 liang; Baijiezi (Semen Brassicae) - 1 liang.
Make pills with honey; take 5 qian in the morning, washed down with plain water.
A large pulse on the left hand indicates exhaustion in the Blood aspect. Use Buxue Wan (Blood-Tonifying Pill):
Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) - 8 liang; Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) - 8 liang; Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) - 4 liang; Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni) - 4 liang; Maimai Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis) - 3 liang; Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) - 1 liang; Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus) - 5 qian; Shengzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) - 1 liang; Baijiezi (Semen Brassicae) - 1 liang; Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) - 5 qian.
Make pills with honey; take 1 liang in the evening, washed down with plain water.
If there is blood heat, remove Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) and add Gudupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis), 5 qian.
Sweating or night sweating, frequent waking during sleep at night, indicates an inability to nourish the complexion and tendons. For blood deficiency, one should naturally tonify blood; what else could one seek besides Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction)? However, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is not used here. Instead, use:
Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) - 1 liang; Maimai Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis) - 3 qian; Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) - 5 qian; Sangye (Folium Mori) - 10 leaves; Gouqi (Fructus Lycii) - 3 qian; Qiancao (Radix Rubiae Cordifoliae) - 1 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies in using Sangye (Folium Mori) to nourish Yin and generate blood. Its further brilliance lies in adding Qiancao (Radix Rubiae Cordifoliae) to promote blood circulation, thereby enhancing benefits. Moreover, it is supported by large doses of Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Maimai Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis), and Gouqi (Fructus Lycii) to jointly generate blood, resulting in sufficient blood, lustrous complexion, and relaxed tendons.
