For this condition, people often treat it by addressing Liver Wood and Lung Metal, which is indeed correct, but they fail to realize that treating Stomach Earth is even more critical. One should treat Stomach Earth, distinguishing between the meridians (Jing) and the collaterals/vessels (Mai).
The Classics state: "When the Foot-Yangming Meridian is tense/spasmodic, the mouth and eyes become deviated, and vision is impaired," indicating that the deviation is due to the Foot-Yangming Meridian of Stomach Earth. It also states: "The Foot-Yangming Vessel runs alongside the mouth and circles the lips," indicating that if the mouth is deviated and lips are slanted, it is due to the Foot-Yangming Vessel of Stomach Earth.
The treatment for both conditions should utilize the following formula:
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Honghua (Carthami Flos).
Decoct with half water and half wine, and take warm. If there are external pathogenic factors at the onset, add three stalks of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to decoct together; inducing slight sweating will lead to self-healing.
[People suffering from facial paralysis often attribute it to phlegm in the Stomach, but this is incorrect.] It is actually caused by extreme deficiency in the Heart, preventing the transportation of Qi and Blood to the mouth and eyes. Mild cases result in deviation, while severe cases lead to aphasia. The prescription is:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 qian), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 liang), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (2 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally.
After one dose, symptoms improve slightly; after two doses, full recovery occurs. [The brilliance of this formula lies not in dispelling wind or evil pathogens, but solely in tonifying the righteous Qi, whereby the deviation heals itself.]
This condition is suitable for regulation through the Heart and Stomach. The Heart is the root of the development of innate spirit and mental activity; the Stomach is a posterior fu-organ and the manifestation of filling the great true Qi. When root and manifestation are harmonious, the chest and diaphragm open, allowing the Zongqi (Gathering Qi) stored in Danzhong (CV17) and Qihai (CV6) to overflow and distribute throughout the five zang-organs and Sanjiao (Triple Burner), covering all upper, lower, interior, and exterior aspects without omission.
If root and manifestation are discordant, Qi cannot be directed to Qihai, causing Zongqi to scatter. Thus, if distribution to the meridians is incomplete, hemiplegia (Pianku) results; if distribution to the five zang-organs is incomplete, organ dysfunction ensues. From this perspective, no illness arises without the failure of True Qi to circulate uniformly.
The method should use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) as the Sovereign herb, Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) as Ministers, and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Zhuli (Bambusae Sap), Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Juice), Jiuji (Allii Tuberosi Juice), Gezhi (Puerariae Juice), Lizhi (Piriformis Fructus Juice), and Nairu (Human Milk) as Assistants and Guides. Treatment will lead to recovery.
If one indiscriminately administers herbs such as Wutou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Fuzi (Aconiti Radix Preparata), or Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), thereby depleting Ying (Nutritive) blood and consuming Wei (Defensive) Qi, death resulting from such practice is effectively murder by the physician.
