Pain in Both Arms and Shoulders
(Pain in the arms and shoulders,) is a disease of the Hand Meridians, caused by Liver Qi stagnation. The prescription is as follows:
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (3 liang), White Peony Root (Baishao) (3 liang), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) (5 qian), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) (5 qian), Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) (3 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) (3 qian), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (3 qian), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao) (3 qian), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (1 qian).
Boil six bowls of water until bubbling, take one bowl of the decoction, add yellow wine, and drink it. The patient will recover after becoming intoxicated.
The brilliance of this formula lies in using White Peony Root (Baishao) as the sovereign herb to calm the Liver (soothe Liver Wood), preventing it from invading the Spleen and Stomach Qi; meanwhile, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) are excellent at dispelling Wind, directly reaching the upper parts of the Hand Meridians; Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao) is also a Wind-dispelling herb, which, combined with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) to attack pathogens, causes the pathogen to retreat naturally; Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), and Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) are supreme medicines for resolving Phlegm; once Wind pathogens are removed, Phlegm does not remain; furthermore, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) penetrates all meridians without obstruction, causing the pain to vanish as if lost, (naturally recovering after intoxication).
Pain in the Back Bone
This syndrome is due to the depletion of Kidney Water, which fails to moisten the brain upwards, causing the Heche pathway (Du Meridian/spinal channel) to become dry and涩 (astringent/stagnant), making movement difficult and thus causing pain. The prescription is as follows:
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi) (1 liang), Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanyuzi) (4 qian), Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (1 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (5 qian), Poria (Fuling) (3 qian), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) (2 qian), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) (1 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (5 fen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (1 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
(After two doses, the water pathways of the Bladder become unobstructed, and the pain in the spine disappears.) This formula tonifies Qi and Water, removes Dampness and Wind, moistens sinews and nourishes bones; how could any pain fail to heal?
Pain in Chest, Back, Hands, Feet, Neck, Waist, and Knees
Traction pain in sinews and bones, inability to sit or lie comfortably, pain migrating frequently and unpredictably—this is Phlegm-Saliva lurking above and below the Heart Diaphragm. It may cause headache, sawing sounds in the throat at night, drooling, heaviness in hands and feet, and cold legs. Simply use Kongxian Dan (Control Phlegm Pill); within less than ten doses, the disease will vanish.
Hypochondriac Pain
This is caused by Liver disease. Therefore, treating hypochondriac pain requires calming the Liver; calming the Liver requires tonifying the Kidney. When Kidney Water is sufficient, Liver Qi is nourished, and hypochondriac pain resolves spontaneously without direct treatment. The prescription is Gan Shen Jian Zi Tang (Liver-Kidney Mutual Support Decoction):
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi) (1 liang), Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanyuzi) (5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (1 liang), White Peony Root (Baishao) (2 liang), Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) (3 qian), Black Gardenia Fruit (Heizhizi) (1 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Left Hypochondriac Pain
Left hypochondriac pain indicates pathogenic invasion of the Liver Meridian. The prescription is as follows:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (3 qian, stir-fried with Evodiae Fructus), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) (1 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi) (1 qian), Peach Kernel (Taoren Ni) (1 qian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao) (1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (1 qian), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (8 fen), Safflower (Honghua) (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take long after meals.
If Phlegm is present, add Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) and Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia).
Right Hypochondriac Pain
Right hypochondriac pain indicates pathogenic invasion of the Lung Meridian. The prescription is as follows:
Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Pian Jianghuang) (2 qian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao) (2 qian), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) (2 fen), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) (5 fen), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (5 fen), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhigancao) (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Pain in Both Left and Right Hypochondria
(When both left and right hypochondria hurt,) the prescription is as follows:
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), White Peony Root (Baishao), Gentianae Radix (Longdancao), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Licorice Root (Gancao), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang).
Decoct in ginger water and take orally. (Original text lacks dosages.)
Migratory Pain in Both Hypochondria with Sound
Migratory pain in both hypochondria accompanied by sound is caused by Phlegm. Use Erchen Tang (Tangerine Peel, Pinelliae Tuber, Poria, Licorice Root) removing Licorice Root, and adding:
Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Foeniculi Fructus (Huixiang).
Decoct in water and take orally. (Original text lacks dosages.)
Masses and Pain in Both Hypochondria
A mass on the left rib causing pain indicates Dead Blood (Blood Stasis). A mass on the right hypochondrium causing pain indicates Food Retention. Generalized body pain, especially severe in sinews and bones, inability to extend or flex, dry mouth, red eyes, dizziness, copious Phlegm, chest diaphragm discomfort, short dark urine, worsening at night. Additionally, generalized itching like insects crawling on the skin; people mistake this for Wind, but do not realize it is Heat due to deficiency of Liver and Kidney Qi. Use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, Cornus Officinalis Fruit, Moutan Cortex, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Poria, Alisma Rhizoma) added with Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu). This is the correct treatment. Improvement is seen after three doses.
Hypochondriac Pain with Fever
Hypochondriac pain with fever is caused by Overwork/Fatigue. Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (Codonopsis Ginseng Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Tangerine Peel, Bupleuri Radix, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Astragali Radix, Licorice Root) added with Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), White Peony Root (Baishao), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao), Foeniculi Fructus (Huixiang), removing Astragali Radix (Huangqi). Decoct in water and take orally. (Original text lacks dosages.)
Hypochondriac Pain with Cough
Cough with rapid breathing and a slippery yet weak pulse indicates pain due to Phlegm Knotting. The prescription is as follows:
Trichosanthis Semen (Gualouren), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao), Mustard Seed (Baijiezi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Foeniculi Fructus (Huixiang).
Decoct in water and take orally. (Original text lacks dosages.)
