The wife of Hu Chanxiang from Wu'an suffered from asthma one month before her delivery. She was prescribed Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) 2 liang, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) 2 liang, and Poxiao (Mirabilite) 1 liang, divided into two doses. The mixture was decocted and taken cold after cooling. After one dose, the condition reduced by more than half; after the second dose, she recovered completely. On the sixth day postpartum, she experienced Xue Mi (blood confusion/stupor due to blood stasis). Again, Liangge San 2 liang, Siwu Tang 3 liang, and Poxiao 1 liang were combined into a single dose, resulting in the profuse discharge of dark purple-black bloody fluid. She remains robust and healthy to this day. Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) often said: For pregnant women with illness, using Poxiao is harmless in the tenth or ninth months, should be avoided in the eighth month, but is acceptable in the seventh month because it is a Yang month, and by the tenth month, the fetus has already formed.
The mother of Official Meng, over fifty years old, had suffered from metrorrhagia for one year. Various physicians used Zelan Wan (Dandelion Pill), Heishen San (Black Divine Powder), Baoan Wan (Peaceful Security Pill), and Baiwei San (Baiwei Powder) for tonification, but without effect. Upon seeing her, Dairen said: Tian Gui (heavenly water/menstrual essence) has ceased; originally, there should be no bleeding. It is likely that heat causes the blood to flow and scatter, rather than cold. Female metrorrhagia is often caused by extreme grief and weeping. Severe grief causes the lung lobes to expand and the heart system to become fearful, leading to uncontrolled downward bleeding of blood. The *Neijing* states: "Yin deficiency and Yang pulsation lead to metrorrhagia." Insufficiency of Yin pulses and excess of Yang pulses, along with a rapid pulse, cause internal collapse, leading to downward flow of blood. The world treats this as deficiency consumption, unaware of its error. Large doses can be administered. A large dose refers to Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity). Subsequently, selected Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma) 2 liang (stir-fried), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 liang (baked), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang (baked) were ground together into fine powder and taken with water. She also took Binglang Wan (Areca Seed Pill) and recovered without adhering to specific days.
A woman had amenorrhea, alternating chills and fever, dry mouth, flushed cheeks, thirst, and coughed once or twice morning and evening. All physicians stated that since menstrual blood did not flow, drugs such as Mengchong (Blatta Orientalis), Shuizhi (Hirudo), Ganqi (Drywood), Naosha (Natrii Chloridum Crystallisatum), Yuanqing (Mylabris), Hongniangzi (Lytta), Moyao (Myrrha), and Xuexie (Sanguis Draconis) should be used. Only Dairen disagreed, saying: Although ancient formulas contain this method, patients taking them will inevitably suffer from abdominal pain and loss of appetite. He ordered the cessation of medication, after which her appetite slightly improved. The *Neijing* states: "Illness of the Two Yangs originates in the Heart and Spleen; if the Heart is affected, blood does not flow, thus women do not menstruate." Since the Heart is affected by accumulated heat, one should suppress Fire and raise Water, circulate dampness and moisten dryness, and open the stomach to promote eating. Thus, emesis expelled one to two sheng of phlegm, and purgation resulted in five to six watery stools. With dampness and waste water removed from above and below, Qi and Blood naturally began to circulate vigorously. Menstruation arrived on schedule, unobstructed by dampness. No toxic drugs like Mengchong or Shuizhi were used. If these were used, although menstruation might occur, urinary retention would ensue, and other pathologies would arise. Whenever Essence and Blood are insufficient, they should be supplemented with food. Toxic drugs must be strictly avoided, as their excessive dominance leads to premature death.
