A child in the household of a long-term official in Chenzhou fell ill and entered a state of deep sleep from which he could not be awakened. One day, various physicians treated him as if he had suffered from convulsions due to fright; some wished to treat him with moxibustion, others prescribed "Da Jing Wan" (Great Fright Pill), and still others used "Shui Yin Bing Zi" (Mercury Cake). The father said, "This child has been healthy in his daily life; how could he suddenly develop convulsions?" He then consulted Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) regarding his son's condition. Dairen examined the pulses at both wrists and found them to be peaceful and harmonious. Dairen stated, "If this were a pulse of wind-stroke or convulsion, it should be surging, large, and strong. Since it is now peaceful, this is not a case of wind-stroke." Dairen privately asked the wet nurse, "Did you drink alcohol to intoxication three days ago?" She immediately laughed and replied, "The lady offered me boiled wine; its taste was exquisite. I drank one *ying* [unit of volume] and fell asleep. Old Chen wine is sweet and lingers in the chest and diaphragm; the qi of the wine was abundant, so the nursing infant also became intoxicated." Dairen then ordered licorice root (*Gancao*), kudua flower (*Gangehua*), cardamom seed (*Suosharen*), and *Guanzhong* to be chopped and decocted into a juice for the child to drink. The child woke up immediately.
The wife of Mr. Liu, who was six months pregnant, suffered vaginal bleeding due to trauma and sought medicine from Dairen. After diagnosis, Dairen combined Sanhe Tang (also known as Yuzhu San/Jade Candle Powder), Chengqi Tang (Chengqi Decoction), and Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) in equal proportions, adding mirabilite (*Piaoxiao*) for decoction. After several bowel movements, the abdominal pain felt like being pinched by fingers, and the vaginal bleeding stopped. This method can only be discussed with those of high intelligence and understanding. One must be cautious about mentioning it to wealthy families; not only will it frighten them, but they will also slander it. Alas! The orthodox path is difficult to follow, and orthodox methods are difficult to apply; this has been true since ancient times.
A pregnant woman, over twenty years old, called upon three midwives when going into labor. Two of the midwives pulled the woman's arms with great force, while one pressed her head against the woman's abdomen and used both hands to pull her waist, exerting maximum effort. The fetus died in the womb and was delivered only after a long time; the infant was covered in blood, having been killed by the midwives. Did they not know that when a melon is ripe, it falls naturally? Why such force? As a result, the woman's meridians became obstructed and closed, her abdomen felt as if cut by a knife, she suffered from unquenchable thirst, and urination ceased completely. The attending physician forbade her from drinking water, causing her mouth and tongue to become dry and withered, her teeth turned black, her breath became foul beyond bearing, she could not eat or drink, and she was delirious and on the verge of death. Dairen first allowed her to drink ice water freely, approximately two *sheng* [units of volume]. Her pain eased, and her thirst stopped. Next, he administered Zhouche Wan (Zhouche Pill) and Tongjing San (Tongjing Powder) five or six times, resulting in dozens of bowel movements, after which her appetite greatly increased. Finally, he regulated her condition using Guiling Ganlu San (Guiling Sweet Dew Powder), Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder), and Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Drink), and she recovered within half a month.
Another woman went into labor and summoned several village women to attend her. An arm emerged first; the attendant, failing to judge the weight and resistance, pulled forcefully, causing the arm to break off, and the fetus died in the womb. The mother's face was blue, her body cold, her sweat flowed incessantly, and she occasionally panted slightly. Alas! The patient's family seemed resigned to death. Suddenly, someone said, "Zhang Dairen has unique insights; try asking him." Dairen said, "Life hangs in the balance; acupuncture and herbs are no longer effective. Quickly fetch a scale hook, attach a thick rope, grease the hook, and have the mother sit with her legs spread outward and reclining. Have one person stand on each foot to stabilize her; then use the hook to catch the dead fetus. Command a strong woman to lean backward and pull out the dead fetus. Five to seven *sheng* of foul blood were discharged, and the mother fainted and lost consciousness. Wait a moment, then pour ice water into her mouth. After gradually swallowing two mouthfuls, she woke up fully and was able to eat. The next day, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) was used to regulate the blood, and she recovered after several days. Dairen often said, 'There are no other issues postpartum; the harm arises because the attending midwife is not the right person.'"
