Sun Boying from Luoyang was implicated in a false lawsuit, and his wife was detained. He fled to an old friend's house. That night, he felt pain in the stomach and hypochondrium (lateral aspect of the upper abdomen), and entrusted the friend to seek medicine. The friend said, "The famous doctor Zhang Dairen is here at present; we should go together." At that time, Zhang Dairen had not yet recovered from a hangover and was forcibly awakened. The friend said, "I have a relative who is ill and wishes to consult a physician." Through the window, Zhang Dairen saw Boying and said, "This gentleman has suffered great fright." The friend asked, "How do you know?" Zhang Dairen replied, "His face is blue and pallid; this indicates the Gallbladder has received terror." Later, after a general amnesty, he was released and then informed Zhang Dairen of the matter.
A young woman from a wealthy family, in her teens, loved eating purple cherries, consuming two or three jin (approx. 1-1.5 kg) each time, year after year, for over ten years. One day, she developed tidal fever resembling consumptive disease (Lao). Zhang Dairen palpated the pulses of both hands, finding them both surging (Hong) and large with strength. He told her, "In the future, you will certainly develop malignant sores and swelling/toxicity, with heat attacking upwards to the eyes; this is a syndrome of Excess Yang and Collapse of Yin." Her family was furious and refused to take detoxifying medicines. Within one or two years, she developed a carbuncle on her back like a plate, unbearable in pain. The girl suddenly remembered Zhang Dairen's previous words, repented repeatedly, and requested Zhang Dairen's treatment. Zhang Dairen used needles around the perimeter of the carbuncle, pricking several hundred times, draining one dou (ancient unit of volume) of blood. After three such treatments, the pain gradually decreased and the swelling subsided, with slight pus discharge leading to healing. When scabs were about to form, he prescribed Shibu Neituo San (Ten-Tonic Interior-Expelling Powder), and she recovered. She observed dietary restrictions for life. However, her vision became dim, and she remained childless for life.
In Wushui, a wealthy family had two sons, the elder thirteen and the younger eleven years old. Both loved to eat one or two jin of purple cherries per meal, requiring to eat them for half a month every year. One or two years later, the younger son developed Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), and the elder son developed Lung Witheredness (Fei Wei), dying successively. Zhang Dairen often sighed, saying, "Is human death due to fate? Or Heaven?" The ancients wrote in poetry: "Foods that are too palatable ultimately cause illness." This is truly a golden maxim. Heaven generates various fruits to nourish people, not to harm them. However, wealthy families, lacking proper education and indulging desires, have led to such outcomes.
When Zhang Dairen passed through HT Yang, a child of about five or six years old from the Qiang family, playing with children of the same team, struck each other with sorghum stalks. The reverse thorns pierced into the throat, remaining there for several days, unable to consume porridge or medicine, resulting in severe swelling and heat. His family reported this to Zhang Dairen. Zhang Dairen ordered water to be fetched. According to the Water Mantra Method in the Daoist Canon: bending the middle and ring fingers of the left hand to form the Three-Mountain Seal, placing a cup of water upon it; using the right hand to perform the Golden Spear Seal mudra; standing with feet in a 'Ding' character shape, facing the sun or a lamp; taking one breath and blowing it into the clean water cup. The mantra recited was:
"I take Laozi's eastward flowing stream,
Laozi, by imperial decree, subdues the toxic water,
I entrust myself to the Great Emperor's reverence,
Those who call upon me wherever they arrive,
Each manifest the Emperor's form,
Swiftly as the law commands."
