Li Wenqing from Lingbei suffered from a condition where his patellae made a "pop-pop" sound upon flexion and extension of both knees. Some believed it was bone grinding. Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) said: Incorrect. If bones do not rub against each other, how can they make noise? This is due to dampness affecting the sinews. Dampness causes sinew tension. Where there is slackness, there is no noise; only where there is tension does noise occur. If you use my medicine, employing vomiting and purging methods to remove water from above and below, once the water is eliminated, the sound will naturally cease. Li Wenqing followed his advice, and indeed, he recovered subsequently.
The wife of Li Zuo Ya from Xicheng suffered from leukorrhea resembling clear water, flowing continuously within the vagina with a foul odor that was unbearable. Her face was sallow, her appetite diminished, and this had persisted for three years. All physicians claimed it was accumulated cold, prescribing drugs such as Hemaetites (Lithogypsi Fibrosum), Sulfur, Zingiberis Rhizoma (Dried Ginger), and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Prepared Fuzi). They repeatedly used dry and warm tonics, yet the discharge increased, requiring her to change linens several times a day. One prescription involved placing ten catties of charcoal in a crucible, putting the herbs inside, sealing it with salt mud, and firing it continuously for three days and nights until red-hot, named "Fire Dragon Pill." After consuming several sheng, the discharge worsened significantly. Between moxibustion and cauterization needles, treatments were countless over three years. Dairen diagnosed: This is turbid water in the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel). Originally, heat pathogen invaded the Taiyang Channel, causing cold water to overflow uncontrollably. Water flows from high to low; one must first cut off its upper source. He first induced vomiting to expel two or three sheng of phlegm-water, then purged more than ten times the next day to evacuate watery stool. After three rounds, profuse sweating occurred all over the body. By the next morning, the patient reported: The turbid discharge has stopped. Subsequently, cold-natured formulas were administered for half a year, resulting in the birth of a child. The *Neijing* states: Heat in the lower jiao causes white fluid to exit via urination. The disease of Dai Mai presents as feeling as if sitting in water. Therefore, treating Dai Mai follows the same method as treating dampness; for dysentery and diarrhea, promoting diuresis and increasing urine output are appropriate. Do not assume red indicates heat and white indicates cold. Liu Hejian’s books have discussed this in detail.
The wife of Zhao Junyu suffered from coughing in the tenth month. Dairen prescribed six ingredients: Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Gancao (Licorice Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), Zhike (Bitter Orange), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). Junyu doubted these were typical cough medicines. Dairen laughed and said: Are you surprised by the absence of Wumei (Mume Fruit) and Ying Susu Qiao (Poppy Shell)? Winter coughs stem from autumnal dampness. Damp-earth qi rebelling upward causes coughing. This formula disperses qi, removes dampness, relieves urgency, and harmonizes the channels. After three doses, the condition resolved effectively.
