A thirty-four-year-old woman dreamed of copulating with spirits and ghosts at night, experiencing extreme fear and panic. She even saw divine halls, underworld courts, boats, and bridges. This condition persisted for fifteen years, during which she remained barren. She resorted to all manner of shamanistic prayers and exorcisms, drilling into her flesh and moxibustion on her muscles, with thousands of acupuncture points treated. Her complexion was sallow and emaciated, accompanied by fever and excessive thirst. Her abdomen was distended and swollen, and she resigned herself to fate. One day, she earnestly requested Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng) to treat her. Dai Ren said: "Yang fire is excessive in the upper jiao, and yin fire is excessive in the lower jiao. Spirits and ghosts are the spiritual manifestations of yin; divine halls are places where yin gathers; boats and bridges are functions of water. The cun positions of both wrists are deep and concealed, indicating phlegm excess in the chest. After three courses of emesis, purgation, and diaphoresis, the dreams ceased within ten days, and she conceived within one month." Dai Ren stated: "My method for treating women to achieve pregnancy is not false."
A fifteen-year-old girl suffered from tinea humida (wet eczema) between her thighs, extending three to four inches long down to her knees. It was intensely pruritic, causing frequent scratching; neither hot water washes nor cauterization provided relief. When the itching subsided, yellowish-red fluid oozed out, causing unbearable pain. Treatments including moxibustion, fumigation, soaking, and herbs such as Rhizoma Realgaris (Shihuang), various roots, Bombyx Batryticatus (Bai Jiangcan), and Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Yangti Gen) were ineffective. The girl was naturally vain and delicate, but this disease prevented her marriage. Her parents sought treatment from Dai Ren. Dai Ren said: "If you follow my instructions, the illness will be cured." The parents agreed. Dai Ren sharpened needles until they were keen. When the itching occurred, he pricked over a hundred times on each lesion until blood flowed out completely, then washed the area with boiled salt water. This process was repeated four times, after which the severe illness was eliminated. This prescription is not recorded here to warn future practitioners against being misled by other tinea remedies. When dampness invades the blood, bloodletting with bi stones must not be neglected.
Another case involved a one-year-old boy from Cai Zhai, who had wet eczema covering his entire abdomen and chest. Scratching caused yellow fluid to discharge, persisting for a year. Dai Ren first administered pills made of bitter powder to induce emesis. After vomiting, he prescribed Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and Junchuan San (Journey River Powder) to induce purgation, resulting in three to five bowel movements. Subsequently, he prescribed Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) with added Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao), decocted and taken in small sips frequently. The patient recovered within a few days.
Han Jiqing from Yingzhou developed wet sores (shi chuang) from his thighs to his feet. The lesions ranged from the size of a coin to a bean. Scratching caused them to break open, and the flowing fluid spread dampness, creating a sensation like insects crawling inside his trousers and socks. This is wet eczema, caused by water-dampness pathogen, hence commonly occurring on the lower limbs. Dai Ren used Zhouche Wan and Junchuan San to induce heavy purgation more than ten times, clearing the disease completely. Although Han had previously disbelieved Dai Ren's medical methods, he became greatly convinced after this cure.
