In the ancient place of Yanyan, a monk who lectured on scriptures suffered from diarrhea for several years. He had used all sorts of drying and warming herbs such as Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Wumei (Mume Fructus), as well as treatments like burning needles (Fanzhen) and cauterizing the navel (Shaoqi). None were omitted. One day, he suddenly fell into a coma and lost consciousness. The number of lay donors (Tan na) bringing paper money to offer sacrifices filled the courtyard. Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) examined his pulses at both wrists; they were deep and forceful. The *Maijue* (Pulse Classic) states: "In diarrhea, if the pulse is minute and small, there is hope for life; if it is surging, floating, and large, there is no prospect of recovery." Dairen administered Guiti San (Coturnia Powder) to induce vomiting, expelling several sheng (a unit of volume) of cold phlegm. He then used Wuyou San (Wuyou Powder) to purge the accumulation in the deficiency center and dry feces, which amounted to nearly one dou (a unit of volume). Subsequently, he regulated the patient's condition over several days using Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Tiaozhong Tang (Regulating the Middle Decoction), Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), and Yiyuan San (Benefiting Origin Powder). The monk recovered. Without exquisite skill and clear insight, who would dare to undertake such a case?
Another lecturing monk, Xian Deming, initially heard that his family had suffered from war, leading to insufficiency of Heart Qi. He was further frightened by bandits, resulting in disharmony of the Zang-Fu organs. Later, upon entering the capital, he failed to adapt to the local water and soil, developing Heart Qi disease until his condition became critical. Over three years, he took Baxian Wan (Eight Immortals Pill), Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill), and Shaogan San (Burned Liver Powder), but none were effective. He then sought treatment from Dairen. Dairen said, "This is Dongxie (Cavity Diarrhea). It arises from prolonged deliberation without resolution. The Liver governs deliberation; when excessive, it overacts on the Spleen. Prolonged thinking causes Spleen dampness to flow downward." Dairen first induced vomiting, expelling half a basin of phlegm, with a few drops of blood appearing at the end, which is because the Liver stores blood. He then used Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and Junchuan San (River-Dredging Powder) to purge him several times, and still made him take a bath to sweat. From that day on, his condition improved daily. He was regularly nourished with Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction) and Baizhu San (Atractylodes Powder). Within one month, his strength returned, and his appetite recovered to normal.
There was also the wife of Li Deqing, who suffered from diarrhea for over a year postpartum. Her limbs were emaciated and weak, and all physicians diagnosed it as a fatal syndrome. At that time, Dairen was at Zhuge Temple. She was transported by boat to beg for treatment. Dairen said, "The pulses at both wrists are minute and small, which is a vital pulse for dysentery-like diseases. Moreover, Dongxie belongs to the Liver Meridian, caused by Liver Wood overacting on Earth. This illness is also Changpi (Intestinal Dysentery/Water Accumulation in Intestines). Changpi refers to water accumulation in the intestines." He first administered 40-50 pills of Zhouche Wan, followed by 3-4 qian of Wuyou San, causing four or five purgations. The temple people were horrified: "With the patient so debilitated, can she withstand this?" Although the crowd doubted, they dared not mock and decided to wait and see. He then used Daoyin Wan (Guiding Drink Pill) to purge her again. When she was thirsty, he regulated her with Wuling San. In the evening, someone was sent to check, and she had already risen and tidied her bed. [Note: The text mentions 'three or forty years', likely referring to the duration of suffering or a textual anomaly, interpreted here as long-term affliction]. With Weifeng Tang for regulation, she could walk after half a month and was healthy after one month. Consequently, the entire temple accepted his treatment, and Li Deqing's brothers were greatly amazed.
Furthermore, Liu Deyuan suffered from Dongxie for over a year. Food was not digested, muscles were emaciated, strength was lacking, gait was unsteady and tilted, and complexion was dark. All medicines in the world for treating dysentery had been used without effect. Coincidentally, Dairen arrived at Yinyang for official duties, and Liu went to consult him. Dairen showed him the explanation of Dongxie in the *Neijing* (Inner Canon). Although Liu no longer doubted, he feared the purgative agents. That night, he burned incense and prayed to the gods: "My illness has persisted for a long time without cure. I wish to seek treatment from Dairen, who says purgation is appropriate. If I do not comply, Dairen is a famous doctor; if I do comply, my body is so frail that I fear I cannot tolerate the medicine. My mother is old, and there is no one to care for her. Tomorrow, I will have no choice but to take the medicine. Please, Spirit, protect me." Dairen first used Zhouche Wan and Wuyou San, causing more than ten purgations. The patient was not exhausted and actually began to enjoy eating. Afterwards, Binglang Wan (Areca Seed Pill) was used to dissolve stagnation. After a few days, the illness decreased significantly. Dairen believed the pathogenic factors were not completely eliminated and should take the previous medicines again. Deyuan happily agreed to be purged. He was purged five more times. In the following days, a bitter agent was used to induce vomiting. Dairen visited his home to inquire, and the family said he had gone down to the village to collect things. Suddenly, one day he entered the city. His complexion was excellent, and his speech was robust, but he stood with a limp. When asked why, Deyuan said, "I have a boil on my foot." Dairen said, "This is the internal pathogen leaving the interior and manifesting externally. After recovery from any illness, this is how it happens."
