Three military officers in the camp of Wanchou all suffered from Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome), which had persisted for years without healing. Below the waist, they experienced swelling, pain, and inability to move; their entire bodies were covered with red sores, and their eyesight was dim. They sought treatment from Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng). Dai Ren intended to administer purgative agents, but two of them refused, having been misled by warm-tonic medicines prescribed by other physicians; both eventually died. Among those suffering from the same condition was Song Ziyu. After a short while, he realized: "They have already died from heat toxicity; should I not change my approach?" He respectfully invited Dai Ren. Dai Ren said, "Your illness has resulted from long-term consumption of hot-natured drugs. First, eliminate the pathogenic factor introduced by the medication, then address the original disease pathogen. You may undergo purgation three hundred times." Song Ziyu replied, "I respectfully obey your teaching." Dai Ren first administered Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Junchuan San (River-Dredging Powder), resulting in a large volume of purgation (approximately one basin). The next day, symptoms decreased by thirty percent. His feet, previously numb and insensible, began to feel pain and itching on that day. After accumulating three hundred purgations, he finally stabilized. Dai Ren stated, "In treating various forms of Wei syndrome, one exclusively targets the Yangming channel. Yangming refers to the Stomach and Large Intestine. This principle applies not only to acupuncture but also to herbal medicine; the methods are consistent."
A man suffered from mouth ulcers for several years. The lesions extended from the lips upwards, down through the throat, and further down to the epigastrium, causing pain throughout these areas. He dared not consume hot foods. Following one session of emesis (Yong), one session of purgation (Xie), and one session of diaphoresis (Han), ninety percent of the symptoms were resolved. Subsequently, he took Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity), and within ten days, he fully recovered.
Shu Maozhi from Xihua suffered from Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) accompanied by night sweats. His complexion showed a bluish-yellow hue. From the knees downward, his legs were cold, painful, and devoid of sweat, while his abdomen felt internally dry and hot. Physicians treated him with Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) and Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) for warming tonification, forbade him from drinking water for five days and nights, prohibited hair combing, and diagnosed it as a cold pattern. Shu sought help from Dai Ren. Dai Ren said, "Your illness is not difficult to cure, but difficult to manage post-recovery. If you engage in excessive sexual activity after recovery, you will likely fail to exercise caution." Shu replied, "I dare not." Dai Ren first administered Zhouche Wan and Junchuan San, inducing purgation five to seven times. As Heart Fire descended, Shu felt thirsty and was given ice water to drink. He was also instructed to bathe. Within a few days, his face became ruddy and lustrous. Later, he consumed congee cooked with river water to gently nourish the Spleen and Stomach. River water facilitates urination. He was further regulated using Huoxue Danggui Wan (Blood-Invigorating Angelica Pill), Renshen Chaihu San (Ginseng and Bupleurum Powder), Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), and Muxiang Baizhu San (Aucklandia and Atractylodes Powder). His condition greatly improved; night sweats ceased, his feet warmed daily, and his appetite increased. Dai Ren often remarked, "This was originally Fei Bi (Lung Obstruction), which should be treated with cooling agents. Water manifests as tears (cooling) in the eyes, as sweat on the skin, and as urine below. Normally, grain intake exceeds water intake; how can there be no water? If water intake is forbidden, internal fluids will inevitably deplete, leading to dryness and heat generation. If a person does not feel thirsty, they will refuse even if offered water." After recovering, Shu indeed forgot the warnings, and his illness relapsed. By the time Dai Ren had departed, Shu passed away.
