Yang Zhongchen, an official in charge of wine, suffered from heart qi pain (pain due to dysfunction of Heart Qi). This person often enjoyed drinking alcohol. Initially, after drinking three or two cups, he would necessarily run about, causing his legs to become lame and lethargic; repeating this thirty to fifty times, until the alcohol effect dissipated slightly, could he return to the banquet. When drinking up to his usual amount, once drunk, he would vomit five or seven times, until dawn vomiting green and yellow water; several days later, his body emitted a fishy, foul odor, and it took six or seven days to recover. Zhang Congzheng (Dai Ren) said: "It is suitable to induce vomiting." He then vomited out one worm, which was red-yellow in color, six or seven inches long, with mouth, eyes, and nose all intact, its eyes covered by a membrane, resembling a snake. It was dried with salt and shown to people.
Zhang Congzheng's servant had contracted Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome caused by pathogenic factors invading the Taiyang channel) along with a neighbor. Both reached the sixth or seventh day, and after purgation, bowel movements remained unobstructed; the neighbor died. The servant had extreme fever and was thrown into a well. After being pulled out, he was placed sitting in a container filled with well water for cooling. At that time, Zhang Congzheng was traveling elsewhere. His family members accidentally recalled Zhang Congzheng's treatment principle, saying: "For Taiyang disease where purgation has failed three times without relief, do not attack again with purgatives; instead, induce vomiting." They tried giving Gudi San (Melon Seed Powder), and after a long while, he vomited approximately three bowls of gelatinous saliva mixed with retained food on the ground, resembling a broom head. He instantly felt relieved. Thus, they realized that many physicians in the world kill patients. Zhang Congzheng's daughter-servant also experienced vomiting; a clerk suffering from Taiyang disease, after vomiting, was given Taibai San (White Tiger Powder) and Ganlu San (Sweet Dew Powder) to regulate his condition.
Zhang Congzheng's second son, after divorcing his wife, became thinner day by day, and his speech sounded muffled as if inside a jar. This disease resides in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). Pressing the third finger (Zhongchong, PC9) indicated Heart Fire (Hyperactivity of Heart Fire). For about half a year, he drank ice and snow daily and took cold-natured prescriptions. Zhang Congzheng said: "He will be cured when he loathes snow." His mother feared the excessive cold nature. Zhang Congzheng scolded her: "You are my relative. My use of medicine is as responsive as a drumstick striking a drum. If you still detest cold medicines, it is no wonder the世俗 (worldly/common) people slander me." By July, he lost his aversion to ice drinks, and the illness gradually resolved.
Zhao Junyu from Anxi suffered from sudden redness and swelling of the eyes, which did not recede with eye drops or washing. He suddenly remembered Zhang Congzheng's words: "All diseases located in the upper part should be treated by inducing vomiting." He used Chatiao San (Tea Regulation Powder) to induce vomiting. After one induction of vomiting, the redness and swelling dissipated. Junyu sighed: "The efficacy of this method is so rapid." He realized that the methods are not far away; it is people who distance themselves from the methods.
