From Minor Snow to Major Cold, this is the period when Taiyang (Greater Yang) Cold Water dominates. Yin energy reaches its extreme and exhaustion, and the heavenly Qi is in a state of收 (gathering/storing), hence it is said: Jueyin (Terminal Yin) Wood Qi is prosperous. "Jue" means exhaustion or end.
(Liver) has an interior-exterior relationship with the Gallbladder, corresponds to the Eastern Wood element, its color is green, externally manifests in the eyes, and primarily governs blood. Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 芍药) is sour and slightly cold; Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 泽泻) is salty and neutral; Wumei (Mume Fructus, 乌梅) is sour and hot.
All wind diseases characterized by tremors and dizziness belong to the Liver. Wood element is active and governs movement. The treatment principle states: For stagnation, use emesis. Where the pathogen is high, induce vomiting to disperse it upwards. One may needle Dacun (LR1, Great Dun), and moxibustion can be applied similarly.
(Heart) has an interior-exterior relationship with the Small Intestine, corresponds to the Southern Fire element, its color is red, externally manifests in the tongue, and governs the circulation of blood through the meridians. Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄) is bitter and cold; Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 木香) is bitter and warm; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连) is bitter and cool; Moyao (Myrrha, 没药) is bitter and hot.
All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire. The treatment principle states: For heat syndromes, use diaphoresis (sweating) to disperse the pathogen. One may needle Shaochong (HT9, Lesser Shock), and moxibustion can be applied similarly.
(Spleen) has an interior-exterior relationship with the Stomach, corresponds to the Central Earth element, its color is yellow, externally manifests in the lips, governs the muscles, and corresponds to the four seasons. Femi (Honey, 蜜) is sweet and cool; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) is sweet and neutral.
All dampness-induced edema and fullness belong to Spleen Earth. The treatment principle states: For severe obstruction, use purgation. Differentiate yin and yang, and promote the flow of water passages. One may needle Yinbai (SP1, Hidden White), and moxibustion can be applied similarly.
(Lung) has an interior-exterior relationship with the Large Intestine, corresponds to the Western Metal element, its color is white, externally manifests in the skin, hair, and nose, and also governs the movement of Qi. Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 干姜) is acrid and hot; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜) is acrid and warm; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 薄荷) is acrid and cool.
All Qi stagnation belongs to Lung Metal. The treatment principle states: For clear/pathogenic factors, use methods to clear the diaphragm, promote urination, and release the exterior. One may needle Shaoshang (LU11, Lesser Shang), and moxibustion can be applied similarly.
(Kidney) has an interior-exterior relationship with the Bladder, corresponds to the Northern Water element, its color is black, externally manifests in the ears, and governs bone marrow. Muli (Ostreae Concha, 牡蛎) is salty and cold; Shuizhi (Hirudo, 水蛭) is salty and cold.
All contraction and pulling sensations caused by cold belong to Kidney Water. The treatment principle states: To subdue it, meaning to restrain it and control its rebellious upward surge. One may needle Yongquan (KI1, Gushing Spring), and moxibustion can be applied similarly.
Diseases occurring during the First Qi phase often manifest as cough, wind-phlegm, wind-jue (revulsion), tidal phlegm-fluid obstructing collaterals, deviation of the mouth and eye, hemiplegia, aphonia, wind-epilepsy, stroke, retained fluid in the chest of women, slight pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, vomiting and nausea, vertigo and palpitations, mania and fear, heart-wind, convulsions, and tremors. For diseases of the First Qi phase, it is appropriate to use Gudi San (Melon Seed Powder, 瓜蒂散) to induce emesis for pathogens above, and purgation for pathogens below.
