Jiao Baishan, a merchant of medicinal herbs, said: A woodcutter came to buy *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen, 苦参) to treat scabies. Unaware of the drug's mild or potent nature, he merely heard that it could cure the disease and decocted a bowl in high concentration for oral administration. Shortly after, he vomited profusely, expelling a basin of saliva-phlegm. Within two or three days, the scabies crusted over and healed.
A child named Desun had red eyes. His mother purchased *Viriditas Cupri* (Tonglü, 铜绿) intending to wash his eyes with the decoction. By mistake, the family gave the liquid to the child to drink. Soon after, the child vomited violently; immediately after vomiting ceased, his eyes returned to normal.
Jiao Baishan accidentally contracted wind-cold, presenting with high fever and headache. A neighbor offered him a bowl of honey tea. Because Jiao felt internal heat, he drank it while hot. He then recalled Dai Ren’s (Zhang Congzheng) words: "All bitter substances can induce emesis." Jiao reasoned that since he also suffered from headache, indicating the pathogen was located in the upper jiao, he tried inducing emesis by probing his throat with chopsticks. Upon completion, his headache resolved instantly.
A woman in her twenties suffered from amenorrhea, alternating chills and fever, coughing, and tidal fever. Quack doctors prohibited her from eating anything. One day, during summer heat, she went out and saw a vendor selling cold jelly noodles. She consumed a large portion mixed with ice water. Immediately, she felt refreshed and vigorous, and her menses resumed naturally after several months.
A man suffered from bloody stools due to visceral toxin (zangdu). It was June, and the heat was unbearable; he resigned himself to death. Suddenly craving ice honey water, he drank a large bowl at the risk of his life. The pain stopped, and the bleeding ceased.
A man suffered from severe dysentery with pus and blood, enduring intolerable pain. He suddenly saw melons soaked in water and felt intense joy. He ate several whole melons, including the skin, and the pus and blood disappeared. People say that dysentery has no fixed form; what nonsense is this? People only know that dysentery is a deficiency-cold syndrome and apply warming, drying, astringent, or obstructive methods, believing there are no other techniques. How could they know that wind, summer-heat, fire, dampness, dryness, and cold—the six qi—can all cause dysentery? This explains why ice water and sweet melon were effective.
While Dai Ren was staying at the residence of Lord Xihua, his servant Zheng Lü fell ill. According to the treatment principle, emesis was indicated. Dai Ren ordered a female servant to administer the emetic. However, the dosage was not controlled properly, and too much medicine was used. Emesis failed to occur; instead, the patient became confused and unconscious. He reported this to Dai Ren. Dai Ren instructed others to fill a pile of horse dung with firewood. Once leveled, Zheng Lü was placed on top lying supine, with his head inverted. Shortly after, he vomited profusely and felt relieved afterward. Dai Ren stated: "Initially, one should administer a small dose; if emesis does not occur, gradually increase the amount."
An old man in Xihua fell ill and required emesis. Dai Ren asked his disciple Luan Jingxian to prepare the medicine. As a novice, Luan administered the drug incorrectly; the patient did not vomit but experienced diarrhea twice. He reported this to Dai Ren. Dai Ren instructed them to obtain warm vinegar juice, have the patient drink two bowls, then administer one qian of the emetic drug again, and probe the throat with a chicken feather to induce vomiting. Once the drug took effect, severe vomiting occurred. Afterward, the patient was calm and peaceful. Dai Ren said: "Whenever using an emetic, first use a bowl of vinegar juice to intercept/moderate it. After swallowing the drug, wait a moment, and keep the chicken feather near the mouth. Although sour, bitter, and salty flavors can induce vomiting, without mechanical stimulation (probing), how will the pathogen be expelled?"
Four women at Li Zhong'an's residence suffered from the same condition. They were given emetics daily and kept in a warm room with two charcoal braziers burning. One woman suddenly fainted, causing panic among the crowd. Dai Ren laughed and said: "Internal heat encountering external heat causes this." They carried her outside and gave her ice water to drink, which revived her immediately. It was just after a snowstorm cleared. Dai Ren said: "Heat conditions awaken when exposed to cold." Everyone was convinced. Only a seasoned expert could have calmed the crowd's panic.
