When Dai Ren was in Xihua, he stayed at the residence of Official Xia. Suddenly, a sore appeared on his neck, resembling a "white-headed" sore (a type of superficial abscess with a white head), with a red and hard base. Due to its small size, he did not worry about it. Suddenly, an old friend invited him to a banquet where mutton lamb wine, chicken, fish, meat sauce, and garlic were served. Because of their past friendship, Dai Ren could not refuse, and he forgot the dietary contraindications. That night, the pain from the sore became unbearable, swelling spread from the neck to the head, he spoke deliriously, and even saw ghosts and spirits. Master Xia was very frightened and wanted to inform Dai Ren's family. Dai Ren laughed and said, "Please do not worry; it will be flat tomorrow." He then mixed Tongjing San (Unblocking Meridian Powder) with wine, administering 6-7 qian, followed by over 100 pills of Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill). Next, he had him drink hot noodle soup to induce vomiting. Both upper vomiting and lower purging occurred simultaneously, expelling half a basin of waste. By noon the next day, the sore and swelling had flattened. Within one or two days, the swelling subsided, and he recovered. Master Xia was greatly amazed upon seeing this.
The wife of Mr. Ma suffered from Daizhi Tong (painful inflammation of the fingertip), which was unbearable. One qian of Tongjing San (Unblocking Meridian Powder) was taken with wine. She vomited heavily at midnight, and the pain subsided after vomiting. I sighed and said, "Previously, I saw Chen Wu suffer from this condition. Physicians attributed it to insect bites or contact with toxic substances on grass. The condition dragged on for months until the pus drained completely before healing. Looking at it today, it is laughable."
A woman suffered from Luoli (scrofula/neck lymph node tuberculosis), which extended to her chest and epigastrium, forming large sores with no healthy skin or flesh remaining between them. She sought treatment from Dai Ren. Dai Ren said, "This is caused by excessive Fire pathogen; it should be treated with Salty-Cold methods." He ordered the use of Cangyan (Blue Salt) to induce vomiting. After one episode of vomiting, scabs formed. Subsequently, using Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) and Jiedu Tang (Detoxifying Decoction), her skin and flesh returned to normal.
Another woman suffered from severe throat swelling and obstruction, unable to swallow liquids or porridge. The swelling persisted for several days despite medication being difficult to administer and acupuncture proving ineffective. Dai Ren prescribed a decoction of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) for the patient to gargle with while hot, and simultaneously applied cold water to draw out the blood from both hands. Within five or six days, the pain decreased, the swelling subsided, and her diet returned to normal. Throat diseases are extremely urgent; one must not recklessly use needles or drugs.
Old Man Zhu, a neighbor to the south, aged over sixty, had persistent fever for several days. His tongue root swelled up, and the tip also swelled, filling his entire mouth, becoming twice the size of his original tongue. A surgeon used a burning needle (red-hot needle) to puncture the Lianquan acupoint (CV23) on both sides under the tongue, but the condition worsened, nearly reaching the vertex (endangering life). Dai Ren said, "Where there is Blood excess, one should drain it." He sharpened a Pi needle (flat-bladed needle) to an extreme point and lightly pricked the tongue, doing so eight or nine times a day. Approximately one to two zhan of blood was discharged each time. This was repeated three times. Gradually, the blood loss decreased, pain subsided, and swelling resolved. The tongue is the external manifestation of the Heart. The Heart governs Blood; therefore, bleeding leads to recovery. It is also said, "All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire." What is the rationale behind using burning needles and moxibustion?
