Xiao Zheng, aged fifteen, suffered from heatstroke while working in the fields. He presented with headache and was too exhausted to get out of bed. Dai Ren administered Shuangjie San (Double Liberation Powder) to induce sweating, followed by Rice Vinegar Soup, but the condition did not resolve. In the late afternoon, he administered Sanhua Shen Wan (Three-Flower Divine Pill) for strong purgation, after which the patient recovered.
Furthermore, Zhang Sao, aged seventy-one, worked in the fields during the summer months. Due to hunger and fatigue, he suffered from heat injury. He had no appetite, vomited frequently, constantly drooled phlegm-water from his mouth, and experienced pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium. Physicians generally used Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder), Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), and Daoqi Wan (Guide Qi Pill) without effect; acupuncture was also added, all attributing the symptoms to Cold of the Stomach. He then sought advice from Dai Ren. Dai Ren said, "Phlegm belongs to the Stomach. Because of Heat in the Stomach failing to contain fluids, phlegm-water flows out. Considering your advanced age, I dare not use emesis. Instead, I will have you stimulate the throat with chopsticks to induce vomiting without medication." The patient vomited one sheng of phlegm-saliva. Subsequently, Huanglian Qingxin San (Coptis Heart-Clearing Powder), Dao Yin Wan (Guide Drink Pill), and Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder) were used to regulate the condition. Food intake increased, but constipation persisted. Therefore, Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Direct Downward Decoction), prepared with fresh ginger and jujube, was administered in a dosage of one liang for strong purgation, leading to recovery.
Thus, a man from Xicheng suffered from malaria (Nüe Ji) and sought treatment from Dai Ren. Palpation of both wrists revealed pulse positions that were deep, hidden, yet forceful, indicating internal accumulation. This is Feiqi (Abdominal Mass). The patient stated, "There is an Feiqi under the left hypochondrium causing pain in the intestines and the mass itself. It resembles an inverted cup, comes and goes intermittently, and has persisted for three years. I have prayed, avoided, and hidden myself in every possible way, yet it remains incurable." Dai Ren said, "This is malaria." He prescribed fifty to seventy pills of Sanhua Shen Wan, taken with cold water, resulting in five or six bowel movements. Then, cold water was used to stop diarrhea, as cold nature promotes contraction. After the damp-fluids were cleared for one or two days, Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) was decocted and consumed in one dose, but the malaria did not resolve. Waiting until the fifth or sixth day, Dai Ren induced vomiting using Changshan San (Dichroa Powder), expelling cold phlegm-saliva six or seven times, resembling churning sludge. Subsequently, Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) was used to harmonize the condition, interspersed with Miaogong Wan (Wonderful Merit Pill) to dissipate accumulations, completely eliminating the malaria.
Ma Guoqing from Xiangling developed a carbuncle (Yong) between the left breast and the hypochondrium, specifically at the Qimen acupoint (LR14). It was hard and did not suppurate, with unbearable pain. Physicians treating sores diagnosed it as Ru Yong (Breast Abscess), Hongxi Lou (Red Channel Fistula), or Xu Xin Chuang (Heart-Piercing Sore). They prescribed Neituo San (Internal Support Powder) for one hundred days and Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction) for several months, all without efficacy. Ma Guoqing came with a stooped back seeking Dai Ren's treatment. Dai Ren met him in the market and said, "This is Madao Yong (Horseshoe Carbuncle)." It is a disease of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, referencing *Lingshu: Twelve Meridians*. Its shape resembles a horseshoe, hence the name. It is hard and does not suppurate. Dai Ren invited him to a restaurant and had him eat noodles soaked in water. Ma Guoqing said, "I feel slightly relieved." The next day, Dai Ren first induced emesis using Cangyan (Sea Salt), then used cooling agents to purge heat, resulting in dozens of bowel movements, after which the swelling dissipated.
Furthermore, a relative of the Zhu Ge Huang family developed a Madao Yong on the left hypochondrium, accompanied by aversion to cold and pain, persisting for four or five days. Dai Ren happened to be避暑 (seeking coolness) in a temple. The patient came begging for medicine. Dai Ren said, "This is a disease of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. The constitution features little blood and much qi; it is hard and does not suppurate, so aggressive attack should not be rushed. One should use bitter agents to induce emesis and Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang to support the expulsion of toxins." Soon the pain stopped, but the root of the carbuncle had not dissipated. A thief-doctor passed by, saw the condition, and said, "I have a miraculous drug that can cause suppuration. Without this, when will it heal?" After using toxic drugs, the pain became unbearable, presenting with external cold and internal heat, incessant vomiting, black stools, inability to eat or drink, wailing and confusion, nearly reaching death. The various aunts were terrified and sought Dai Ren at night. Dai Ren said, "You should seek the original doctor; I cannot treat this." The mistress also came to report, repeatedly. Dai Ren said, "The skin is thin and muscles shallow in the hypochondrium; how can toxic drugs be used lightly!" He ordered the residue to be washed out and used cooling agents to purge downward. The pain stopped immediately, and the swelling subsided.
