Zhang Xiaoyi initially suffered from scabies. Due to scratching, the condition transformed into swelling, accompanied by wheezing and an inability to eat. Dairen diagnosed it as Fengshui (Wind-Water edema). Water qi, when struck by wind, causes sudden and violent swelling, hence the entire body swelled. First, he was made to bathe. While the pores were open, in a warm room, an acid-bitter preparation was administered with one whole Scorpion (Quanxie) added to induce vomiting. The medicinal powder was taken in stages, totaling about three qian, expelling several sheng of phlegm. Sweat gushed out along with it, and the swelling subsided by eight or nine tenths. After a day's interval, just before sleep, around the first watch of the night, he took over seventy pills of Shen Wan, swallowed in three doses. By midnight, he had one bowel movement, followed by continuous discharge of watery stool. Then, sixty pills of Zhu Tao Hong Wan (Boiled Peach Kernel Pill) were taken, washed down with Musk Decoction, resulting in three or four more bowel movements. Two or three days later, Zhou Che Wan (Boat Vehicle Pill), Tongjing San (Meridian-Opening Powder), and Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) were used for regulation, leading to recovery.
Furthermore:
The wife of Clerk Cao suffered from Qi stagnation due to postpartum sorrow and indignation. Her whole body was swollen, including the genitalia, while urination and defecation remained normal. Her pulse was floating and large; this was Wind-Water edema. First, vinegar water was used to induce vomiting of phlegm, assisted by fire therapy to promote sweating. Next, Zhou Che Wan (Boat Vehicle Pill) and Xunchuan San (River-Dredging Powder) were used to induce diarrhea several times. Later, Zhou Che Wan and Tongjing San (Meridian-Opening Powder) were used again, causing over ten bowel movements. Six days later, Zhou Che Wan and Xunchuan San (River-Dredging Powder) were used to purge again. Finally, forty-plus pills of Shuizhu Tao Hong Wan (Water-Boiled Peach Kernel Pill) were administered. Within less than a month, symptoms returned to their previous state. In total, there were two instances of induced vomiting and four instances of purging, amounting to over one hundred evacuations. Contemporary commentators argued that this was merely the "Emptying the Bag" method (forcing out internal accumulations); if the disease recurred, death would be certain. Common people only saw merchants selling silver powder and Croton seed (Badou), which might temporarily reduce swelling but lead to certain death upon recurrence, thus shocking the public. How could they know that this method is actually the profound and subtle approach to treating stagnation described in the *Neijing* (Inner Canon)? Moreover, these medicines have only slight toxicity; how could toxic substances harm the body? It is only necessary to abstain from sexual intercourse and other activities after recovery. Furthermore, Fengshui (Wind-Water) differs from pure Water retention; there is no mechanism for its recurrence.
The child of Soldier Qiu in Yancheng suffered from Fengshui (Wind-Water edema). Other physicians used medicines containing Silver Powder (Yinfen) and Lead Subcarbonate (Fenshuang), which caused his urine to become scanty and difficult, and led to loss of appetite. His head swelled as much as his abdomen, and his limbs were full, resembling crystal. His family, feeling desperate, sought treatment from Dairen. Dairen said, "This case is not the same as in adults. Adults suffering from water diseases often do so due to retained fluid or excessive sexual activity. This child is only seven years old; it is a Fengshui syndrome, and sweating should be induced." Therefore, a warm room was prepared, completely shielded with screens and curtains so that no firelight was visible. If internal heat met external fire, the patient would likely become confused and unconscious. He was made to drink a large amount of Weifeng Tang (Stomach-Wind Decoction) and bathe. Using the steam from the bath, multiple layers of cloth sheets (three to five layers) were placed over him. Sweat flowed like water, reducing the swelling by five-tenths. After one or two days, the same method was repeated. Upon sweating, the swelling reduced by seven-tenths. After two sessions of inducing sweat, the swelling completely disappeared. Although he still could not eat, Binlang Wan (Areca Seed Pill) was used for regulation, and the child was happy and laughing as usual.
