Pediatric children, due to internal injury from milk and food, and external contraction of cold pathogenic factors, result in the congealing of food and cold, causing abdominal pain. The manifestations include fever with aversion to cold, accompanied by abdominal pain, anorexia, vomiting, and incessant crying. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Huoxiang Hezhong Tang (Agastache Harmonizing Decoction), which contains Huoxiang (Agasthis Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma preparata), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Suye (Perillae Folium), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), using Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) as a guide drug for decoction.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Pediatric children suffering from abdominal pain due to food stagnation and cold contraction. The prescription uses Huoxiang Geng (Agastis Caulis) 8 fen, Chuan Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 1 qian, Sharen Fen (Amomi Fructus powder) 5 fen, Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 qian, Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma preparata) 5 fen, Nen Sugen (Perillae Caulis) 8 fen, Shanzha Tan (Crataegi Fructus carbonized) 1.5 qian, Chao Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus stir-fried) 8 fen, using two slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) as a guide drug.
After pediatric smallpox/rash or severe illness, if medication is inappropriate or nursing care is improper, it may develop into Tonglao (Pediatric Consumption/Deficiency Syndrome). The manifestations include sallow complexion, dry mouth, vexatious cough without phlegm, lack of appetite, emaciation of muscles, and gradual deterioration leading to inability to recover. There were no established fixed formulas in ancient times.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Tonglao differs from adult consumption syndrome; the constitution deteriorates gradually, so treatment should also restore health gradually. Internally, use fresh Digupi (Lycii Cortex) 3 qian, Yanci (Swallow's Nest shreds) 1 qian, and seven large red dates, decocted and taken orally once daily. Externally, use Xionghuang (Realgar) 5 fen, Jingmian Zhusha (Mirror-faced Cinnabar) 5 fen, Zhen Shexiang (Moschus) 5 li, and Woliuhuang (Japanese Sulfur) 5 fen, each ground into fine powder, mixed with added Baijiu (Baijiu/Spirit) until uniform. Take one head garlic bulb, remove the stem, dip it in the medicine, and rub it up section by section starting from the coccyx. Observe where cyanosis/swelling appears to locate the "consumption worm"; rub this area several more times, and the worm will naturally perish. Treating both internally and externally can eradicate the root cause.
Pediatric children have timid spirit and qi; suddenly encountering unusual objects, being touched by unfamiliar persons, or entering temples may cause collision with yin energy, hence termed Ketu (External Intrusion Syndrome). The manifestations include spitting out blue, yellow, or white foam, or regurgitating undigested food residues, changing facial colors, abdominal pain with rolling over, convulsions resembling epilepsy, but without upward deviation of the eyes. Ancient methods primarily use Xiongshi San (Realgar and Musk Powder), containing Xionghuang (Realgar) 1 qian, Ruxiang (Olibanum) 5 fen, Shexiang (Moschus) 1 zi, ground together into powder. For each dose of 1 zi, mix with blood from a freshly cut rooster comb and administer orally. Cover the child with the mother's clothing to achieve recovery.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Pediatric Ketu differs from syndromes caused by sudden fright and terror. The prescription uses Zhusha Ban Fushen (Cinnabar-coated Poria with Hostwood) 2 qian, Longgu (Fossilized Mammoth Bones) 2 qian, Dan Zhuru (Bambusae Medulla) 1 qian, decocted using water boiled in silver or gold vessels instead of plain water.
