External Treatment for Dispersing the Exterior:
When infants and children present with fever, regardless of whether it is caused by wind-cold invasion, food stagnation, or epidemic exanthematous diseases (epidemic rash diseases), the method involves taking a handful of scallions, mashing them to extract juice, adding a small amount of sesame oil, and mixing well. Dip fingers in the scallion oil and massage the infant's chest center, face, neck, back, and other areas until a slight sweat appears. This disperses the exterior pathogen without damaging the healthy qi.
External Treatment for Clearing Heat:
When infants and children contract pathogens that penetrate inward, or when milk and food stagnate internally causing stagnant heat, the method involves mixing equal parts of egg white and sesame oil, adding one qian of fine powder of Realgar (Xionghuang), and stirring evenly. Take a clump of women's loose hair, dip it in the mixed oil, and gently pat from the chest down to the umbilicus. In cold weather, warm the oil over fire; patting should last for half an hour. Finally, place the hair on the chest and secure it with a cloth band tied like a stick of incense to remove it. This can reduce various febrile conditions.
External Treatment for Relieving Restlessness:
For infants and children suffering from alternating chills and fever, or where measles toxin is extremely hot, the method involves using one spoonful of Lead White (Shuifen), blended smoothly with egg white. Apply slightly to the infant's epigastrium and both palms. Additionally, take more than ten pieces of yeast cake used for brewing wine, grind them into a paste, mix with hot wine to form two cakes, and apply them to the soles of the feet. After a short while, heat dissipates through the limbs, and restlessness naturally subsides.
External Treatment for Opening Obstruction:
When infants and children are lethargic and unconscious, unable to take medicine, it is often due to phlegm obstructing the large collaterals of the Spleen, blocking the pathways for the ascent and descent of Yin and Yang. The method involves taking a handful each of fresh Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Xian Changpu), fresh Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Sheng Ai Ye), fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Shengjiang), and fresh Bulbus Allii Cepae (Sheng Cong). Mash into a paste, stir-fry these four ingredients with sesame oil and good vinegar until hot, wrap in cloth, and apply hot compresses from the top of the head, back, chest, and limbs downwards. Once the phlegm is cleared, the child will suddenly awaken.
External Treatment for Guiding Down Phlegm:
For infants and children with cough due to phlegm, upward rebellion of Qi, and rapid breathing, requiring guidance of phlegm downward, the method involves using one liang of raw Alum (Sheng Baifan), grinding it into fine powder, adding a little flour, and mixing with good vinegar to form two small cakes. Apply to the soles of the feet and wrap with cloth for three hours; the phlegm will naturally descend.
External Treatment for Warming Phlegm:
For infants and children with cold pathology in the chest, occasional syncope, and vomiting green cold phlegm upon waking, the method involves using one raw Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Sheng Fuzi) and one liang of fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Shengjiang). Mash together, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth, and apply hot compresses to the upper back and anterior chest. Also, knead the ginger and aconite together into a cake and apply to the epigastrium. After a long time, the cold phlegm will naturally disperse.
External Treatment for Grasping Qi:
In severe cases of deficiency collapse in infants and children, where true Qi floats and scatters failing to return to its root, the method involves using five fen of Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu), seven grains of Piper Longum (Hujiao), and one qian of Galla Chinensis (Wubeizi). Grind into very fine powder, mix with wine to form a cake, seal it onto the umbilicus, and tie securely with a belt. The Qi will naturally become smooth.
External Treatment for Unblocking Collaterals:
When infants and children suddenly experience cold extremities, it may be due to exterior pathogens closing the collaterals, wind-phlegm obstructing Ying and Wei, or post-illness Yang failing to distribute to the limbs. The method involves taking a piece of fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Shengjiang), baking it until hot, mashing it, adding a little sesame oil, and mixing well. Dip fingers in the ginger oil and massage the infant's hands and feet downwards to unblock collaterals. Stop once warmth returns slightly; do not overdo it.
External Treatment for Alleviating Pain:
For infants and children with chest fullness and abdominal pain, the method involves stir-frying salt until extremely hot, wrapping it in cloth, and applying hot compresses to the chest and abdomen from top to bottom. Reheat and reapply as it cools until the pain stops.
Appendix: Method for Resolving Poison from Incorrect Medication:
If infants and children accidentally ingest incompatible drugs, presenting with restlessness, or continuous vomiting and diarrhea, to resolve the ingested poison, the method involves decocting one cup of Black Soybean (Heidou) and three qian of raw Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis (Sheng Gancao) into a concentrated decoction for oral administration. If black soybeans are unavailable, Mung Bean (Lvdou) can also be used.
