Pediatric coughs of various types, with a pale complexion and pale lips, white of the eyes showing a bluish tint, and sputum inconsistent with symptoms, indicate an excess of Liver Wind (Liver Wind) and a deficiency of Lung Qi. This condition cannot be treated with routine methods. If dispersing wind and clearing the lungs is employed, it will only exacerbate dryness and damage Yin. One should simply use Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), five qian (steamed over rice after moistening with light ginger decoction), combined with Ban Sheng Ban Chao Gan Cao (Licorice Root, half raw and half stir-fried), totaling two qian five fen, ground into a fine powder. Each dose is one qian, mixed with a little rock sugar and taken with rice gruel. Continuous administration for seven days will result in recovery.
The *Classic* states: "Those who suffer from thieving winds and empty evils are affected by the Yang meridians; when affected by Yang, the pathogen enters the Six Fu Organs. Entering the Six Fu Organs leads to fever and inability to lie down, manifesting upwards as panting and calling out." It also states: "All qi stagnations belong to the Lung." Panting is essentially the stagnation of Lung Qi. Any condition characterized by rapid and urgent exhalation is called "Panting Urgency" (Chuan Ji), presenting externally with shoulder lifting and abdominal heaving. If there is also sound in the throat during breathing, it is called "Wheezing Roar" (Xiao Hou). However, the origins of disease are not uniform. For instance, coarse breath, chest fullness, thick sputum, hard stool, and panting indicate Excess Heat. Weak respiration, inability to sustain breath, and panting indicate Deficiency Evil. Panting caused by cold and wind constraint, and panting caused by phlegm-fluid obstruction and rebellion are other causes. Furthermore, there is the syndrome of "Ma Pi Feng" (Horse Spleen Wind), which is most critical. The distinction between these conditions can lead to errors of a thousand miles if mistaken by a hair's breadth; therefore, this analysis on panting is composed.
When children develop panting with sound due to Fire Evil suppressing Metal (Lung), external signs include dry mouth and tongue, extreme thirst, red face, and red lips. Upon careful examination of pulse and symptoms, if it belongs to Lung Heat, ancient methods primarily prescribe Liang Ge San (Cool the Chest Powder) [containing Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), with Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) and Sheng Mi (Raw Honey) as guides]. [Chen Shouzhen's Note: Mang Xiao and Bo He may be omitted in this formula.] If it belongs to Stomach Heat, ancient methods primarily prescribe Liang Ge Bai Hu Tang (Cool the Chest White Tiger Decoction) [containing Sheng Da Huang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sheng Huang Qin (Raw Scutellariae Radix), Bo He Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), Sheng Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Sheng Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), with Jing Mi (Oryzae Semen) as a guide]. [Chen Shouzhen's Note: Da Huang, Pu Xiao, and Bo He in this formula may be omitted.] If Heart Fire suppresses Metal, ancient methods primarily prescribe Dao Chi San (Guide Out Red Powder) [containing Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), with Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medullia) and Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) as guides]. [Chen Shouzhen's Note: If Heart Fire is excessively strong, Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Hua Shi (Talcum) may be added.] If Kidney Deficiency Fire scorches Metal, ancient methods primarily prescribe Zhi Bai Di Huang Tang (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Decoction) [containing Gan Sheng Di Huang (Dried Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Chao Shan Yao (Stir-fried Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Chao Zhi Mu (Stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Yan Chao Huang Bai (Salt-stir-fried Phellodendri Cortex), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), etc.]. [Chen Shouzhen's Note: This formula is excellent, but dosages need not be heavy; particularly, Huang Bai should be used sparingly for safety.]
