Pediatric cough due to food stagnation arises from phlegm generated by food retention, where heat qi steams and steams upward, causing Lung Qi to ascend and phlegm to obstruct, resulting in frequent coughing. If accompanied by loose stools, the ancient method prescribes Qu Mai Er Chen Tang (Qu Mai Erchen Decoction) [containing Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Jiangzhi Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome Prepared with Ginger), Fuling (Poria), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), Jiangzhi Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome Prepared with Ginger), Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), Chao Maiya (Fried Hordeum Fructus), Chao Shenqu (Fried Massa Medicamentosa), Gualouren (Trichosanthes Seed), Chao Zhishi (Fried Aurantium Fructus Immaturus), with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube) as guides]. If accompanied by constipation, the ancient method prescribes Su Ting Gun Tan Wan (Su Ting Guntan Pill) [containing Chao Suzi (Fried Perilla Seed), Ku Tingli (Fruitus Descurainiae seu Lepidii, 1 liang), Jiu Zheng Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome Steamed with Wine, 4 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilaria Lignum, 5 qian), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 4 liang), Qingmengshi (Calcareous Schist Calcined until golden, 5 qian), all ground into powder and formed into pills with water], administered according to the child's deficiency or excess, taken down with ginger decoction.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] In pediatric cough due to food stagnation, stagnation transforms into phlegm; phlegm obstruction leads to shortness of breath. This is the root cause of coughing. For loose stools, use only Chao Maiya (Fried Hordeum Fructus, 1 qian), Chao Shenqu (Fried Massa Medicamentosa, 1 qian), Chao Zhishi (Fried Aurantium Fructus Immaturus, 8 fen), Banxia Qu (Pinellia Fermented Mass, 8 fen), Zhi Dansheng (Arisaema Cum Bile, 3 fen), Jiangzhi Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome Prepared with Ginger, 5 fen), Chao Gualou (Fried Trichosanthes Fruit, 1.5 qian), Chao Shanzha (Fried Hawthorn Fruit, 1 qian), with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), ten drops each, as guides. For hard stools, add Jiu Zheng Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome Steamed with Wine, 5 fen).
When children remove clothing and are accidentally exposed to wind-cold, the Lung is first affected by the pathogen, causing Qi to reverse upward, blocking the throat and diaphragm, leading to cough, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion with heavy voice, and frequent expectoration of phlegm and saliva. The ancient method advises first using Shen Su Yin (Shensu Drink) to release exterior pathogens [containing Suye (Perilla Leaf), Qian Ge (Kudzu Root), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizoma), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), Chao Zhiqiao (Fried Aurantium Fructus Immaturus), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chi Fuling (Red Poria), etc.]. Then use Jin Fei Cao San (Jinfecao Powder) to clear phlegm and cough [containing Xixin (Asarum Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizoma), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chi Ling (Red Poria), with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube) as guides]. If constrained by bitter-cold pathogens, the ancient method prescribes Jia Wei Hua Gai San (Modified Huagai Powder) [containing Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen), Chao Suzi (Fried Perilla Seed), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), Chao Sangbai Pi (Fried Mori Cortex), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chi Fuling (Red Poria), etc.], decocted in water and taken warm after meals.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For pediatric cough caused by wind-cold exposure, use only Kuxingren (Bitter Apricot Seed, 2 qian), Nen Sugeng (Tender Perilla Stem, 1 qian), Ruan Qianhu (Soft Peucedani Radix, 5 fen), Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root, 1 qian), Liubai Chenpi (White Tangerine Peel Retained, 8 fen), Pian Jiegeng (Sliced Platycodon Root, 5 fen), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root, 5 fen).
For thin phlegm, add Jiangzhi Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome Prepared with Ginger, 5 fen); for thick phlegm, add Chuan Beimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosae Bulbus, 8 fen), Gualouren (Trichosanthes Seed, 1 qian).
