A sore appearing on the midline of the posterior neck in infants is called Duikou Chuang (Opposite Mouth Sore). If it appears on the side, it is called Pian Duikou (Lateral Opposite Mouth Sore). Ancient methods involved internal administration of fresh eggplant calyxes and raw red He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum), decocted and taken for two to three doses; if unbroken, it resolves, and if broken, it drains pus and generates flesh. Externally, dried eggplant calyxes are burned, and the smoke is frequently applied to fumigate the wound. After a while, the wound opens naturally, and a single red thread flows down without moving. One must wait until the red thread flows out completely and breaks off on its own, at which point the toxin is exhausted.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For treating Duikou Chuang, use only three qian of oil dirt from a woman's head, one black-backed crucian carp (weighing approximately one liang), and a pair of meat from the corners of a male pig's eyes. Pound them together into a paste and apply to the affected area for immediate cure.
Infants who cannot protect their backs initially allow wind pathogens to enter the spinal column, causing Jing-Xue (Essence-Blood) circulation to stagnate, resulting in Gui Bei (Turtle Back). Ancient methods primarily prescribe Song Rui Dan (Pine Stamen Pill), containing ingredients such as Song Hua (Pollen Pinus), Zhi Qiao (Fructus Aurantii), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Qian Hu (Radix Peucedani), and Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi), all in equal parts, made into honey pills and swallowed with rice soup. Externally, duck feathers soaked in turtle urine are brushed onto the elevated areas of the infant's chest several times; over time, it flattens naturally.
Method for obtaining turtle urine: Anciently, a lotus leaf was used to catch the turtle, and a mirror was shone upon it, but this often yielded no response. Only by placing a copper gong inside which the turtle is placed, and covering the turtle with another gong above, then striking the gongs to startle it, will the urine flow out.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Gui Bei may result from sitting too early, leading to kyphosis where the back rises like a turtle, though this is not always the case. Even if wind enters the spine, there must be soreness and pain. If there is no soreness or pain, yet the spinal bones protrude high like a turtle, it is actually due to congenital insufficiency and disease of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). It is suitable to use Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii), Jin Mao Gou Ji (Rhizoma Cibotii), Lu Jiao (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum), and Gui Ban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis). First decoct into an ointment/paste, then form into pills. Swallow with plain boiled water morning and evening, or dissolve and take, to nourish the root and Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Externally, camphor oil can be frequently applied to the convex areas of the back to gradually flatten them.
An infant's chest is high, distended, and full, shaped like an inverted palm. This is caused by the nursing mother consuming excessive amounts of Five Pungent Spices, alcohol, wheat products, and roasted foods, or by the infant sucking summer heat milk or overnight milk. This leads to long-term phlegm stagnation in the infant's Lung Zang (Organ), generating Wind-Heat. The Lung is affected by Fire Pathogens, causing the chest bone to swell and rise like a turtle. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Bai He San (Lily Powder), containing Tian Men Dong (Radix Asparagi), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Bai He (Bulbus Lilii), Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae), Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori), Zhi Qiao (Fructus Aurantii), Tian Ting Li (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae), and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), made into honey pills the size of mung beans. Taken nightly before sleep with plain boiled water. The dosage should be adjusted according to the infant's age in months.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Infant Gui Xiong (Turtle Chest) often occurs after smallpox or chickenpox due to improper care, where the Lung fails to clear Heat and descend Qi, presenting this symptom. Simply use Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori) one qian, Chao Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii Radicis, stir-fried) one and a half qian, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) three qian, Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) one qian, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) four fen, and a pinch of Jing Mi (Semen Oryzae Sativum). Decoct in water and take for a cure.
