Pediatric headache due to wind-cold is caused by pathogenic invasion of the Taiyang channel (Taiyang channel disease). The manifestations include aversion to cold and fever, with pain extending from the vertex down to the frontal angle, occurring intermittently. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Qingkong Gao (Clear Sky Paste) to induce sweating for exterior release (ingredients include Qianghuo [Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix], Fangfeng [Saposhnikoviae Radix], Chaihu [Bupleuri Radix], Chuanxiong [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix], Huanglian [Coptidis Rhizoma], Sheng Gancao [Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], with Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma] as a guide drug). If the pain is severe, add Xixin [Asari Radix et Rhizoma]; if constipation is present, add Chuan Dahuang [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma].
[Chen Shouzhen's Note:] For pediatric headache caused by wind-cold invasion, using Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Chaihu, and Chuanxiong together results in excessive dispersal of the exterior. Instead, it is better to use Subohe [Menthae Haplocalycis Herba] 8 fen, Nensangya [Mulci Ramulus] 1 qian, Lianxu Congbai [Allii Fistulosi Bulbus cum radicula] 2 cun, Dan Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix] 1 qian, and Sheng Gancao [Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] 5 fen, with two slices of Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma] as a guide drug. After one dose, the pain subsides, and no further doses are necessary.
Pediatric headache due to stomach heat is located in the Yangming channel (Yangming channel disease), caused by unregulated consumption of rich and sweet foods in daily life, leading to stomach fire flaring upward. Consequently, upon onset, symptoms include dry nose and eye pain, with pain extending from the head down to the teeth and cheeks, occurring at irregular intervals. Ancient methods primarily use Jiawei Chatiao San (Modified Tea-Powder Powder) to clear heat (ingredients include Jingjie Sui [Schizonepetae Spica], Bohe [Menthae Haplocalycis Herba], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix], Qing Chaye [Camelliae Sinensis Folium], Sheng Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum], Baizhi [Angelicae Dahuricae Radix], Chuanxiong [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], with Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma] as a guide drug). For those with constipation, add Chuan Dahuang [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma].
[Chen Shouzhen's Note:] For pediatric headache caused by internal heat in the stomach fu-organ, clearing and resolving methods should be employed. The formula uses Bohe Jian [Menthae Haplocalycis Herba tip] 5 fen, Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum] 2 qian, Yan Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma processed with salt] 1 qian, Chao Niuxi [Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix stir-fried] 8 fen, Maidong [Ophiopogonis Radix] (heart removed) 1.5 qian, Xuan Zexie [Alismatis Rhizoma] 1 qian, and Zhi Gancao [Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] 5 fen, with fifteen fresh leaves of Zhu Ye [Bambusae Folium] as a guide drug. If the pain is severe, add Fengegen [Puerariae Lobatae Radix] 1 qian and Dengxin [Junci Medulla] 30 cun; if stool is dry and difficult to pass, add Qingning Wan (Clear Peace Pill) 1.5 qian.
The *Classic* states: Excessive labor and irregular diet damage the Middle Qi (Middle Jiao energy), allowing cold pathogens to invade when deficiency exists, causing obstruction of Yang qi flow, thus resulting in sudden abdominal pain. However, children do not typically suffer from excessive labor, but only from irregular diet. Pain in the Zhongwan region belongs to the Taiyin spleen channel (Taiyin syndrome); periumbilical pain belongs to the Shaoyin kidney channel (Shaoyin syndrome); hypogastric pain belongs to the Jueyin liver channel (Jueyin syndrome). These are not discussed in the context of common pediatric abdominal pain. Only food stagnation pain, cold pain, and worm pain, as well as pain caused by internal food retention combined with external cold, fall within these four categories. Therefore, this chapter on "Abdominal Pain" is presented.
