Pediatric "Xiao Ji" (Excessive Hunger), arises from the stirring of Spleen Fire leading to Middle Jiao Consumption (Zhong Xiao, consumption centered on the Spleen/Stomach). The heat transfers from the Spleen to the Stomach, manifesting as a preference for excessive eating without satiety and yellow urine. This condition is named Zhong Xiao (Middle Consumption). Ancient methods advocate using Renshen Baihu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) [ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), with Wanjingsmi (Late Rice Grain) as an guiding agent]. It is decocted until the rice is cooked, clarified, and taken cold.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For pediatric Xiaogu Shanji (Consuming food easily and feeling hungry frequently), the prescription uses Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 2 qian, Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 1.5 qian, Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 1.5 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 1.5 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 6 fen, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 6 fen, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) 6 fen, with He Ye (Nelumbinis Folium) 1.5 qian as a guiding agent.
Pediatric "Xiao Zhuo" (Turbid Urine), where the urine resembles paste or fat, is named Xia Xiao (Lower Consumption). Ancient methods advocate using Jiawei Dihuang Tang (Modified Rehmannia Decoction) [ingredients: Da Shengdi (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Huai Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shanzhuyu Rou (Corni Fructus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Bei Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Jian Lianrou (Nelumbinis Plumula), Qianshi (Euryales Semen), Damaidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber)]. It is decocted strongly and taken on an empty stomach.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] When pediatric patients present with thirst and urine resembling paste, one should use Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill/Decoction) combined with Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) as the primary treatment. The formula consists of: Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 1.5 qian, Shanyurou (Corni Fructus) 1 qian, Huai Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Fen Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 1 qian, Yun Fuling (Poria) 1.5 qian, Bai Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 1.5 qian, Xiyangshen (American Ginseng Root) 1.5 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed) 1.5 qian, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 0.5 fen.
The syndrome of headache varies. Severe anger causes Taiyang Meridian headache, but children do not exhibit this syndrome. Headache accompanied by vomiting clear fluid, regardless of season, which stops after consuming ginger, indicates deficiency-cold of the Middle Qi; children do not have this syndrome. Fatigue-induced headache results from deficiency of Yang Qi failing to ascend; children also lack this syndrome. Phlegm-dampness headache involves vomiting phlegm-saliva during attacks due to upward assault of damp-phlegm; children again do not have this syndrome. Heat-jue headache, even in severe winter, prefers wind-cold where pain ceases, and worsens slightly with warmth; children certainly do not have this syndrome. So, how to differentiate pediatric headache? The answer is: there are only Exterior and Interior syndromes. Those on the Exterior are exogenous wind-cold; those on the Interior are steaming internal heat. Therefore, this section on resolving headache is composed.
