It is stated: If a person experiences chills and aversion to cold, desiring only to wear thick clothing and stay near warmth, with a heavy and occasionally painful head, nasal congestion, turbid purulent nasal discharge, coughing, sweating upon slight exertion or anhidrosis, and even shivering, this is due to external pathogenic cold invading the exterior, or internal injury to the Lung and Stomach caused by drinking cold fluids. When internal and external pathogens combine and remain stagnant without being expelled, it is called "Cold Invasion" (Gan Han). When cold enters from the exterior, both Cun Kou pulses on the left and right wrists are tight, or only the right Cun pulse is tight. When cold arises from within, the pulse is slow and small. For cases with anhidrosis, Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) is the primary treatment. For cases with slight sweating, Wen Fei Tang (Warming Lung Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction)
Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, de-rooted), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Pinelliae Tuberum Preparatum (Banxia, washed seven times in boiling water), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi Gancao, honey-fried), each 1 liang.
Grind the above into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 2 large zhan of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 1 jujube (split open). Decoct together until 8 fen remains, strain, and take warm.
Wen Fei Tang (Warming Lung Decoction) [Formula missing]
If yin-cold accumulates and stagnates causing severe pain in the heart and abdomen, vomiting and nausea, cold limbs, chest discomfort, and backache, Liang Jiang Tang (Galangal Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Liang Jiang Tang (Galangal Decoction)
Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (Gao Liangjiang, 1 liang, crushed and stir-fried), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guan Gui, 1 liang, bark removed), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 1 liang, rhizome removed, crushed and stir-fried), Poria (Bai Fuling, 1 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 0.5 liang, processed).
Grind the above into a powder. Take 2 large qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until 7 fen remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
If there is merely coldness and heaviness in the head, dizziness upon movement, muscle pain, pulling stiffness preventing turning over, sweating, aversion to cold, difficult urination, loose stools, shortness of breath, cold feet, occasional sore throat, and mild fever, this is due to cold-dampness lodging and binding in the meridians, failing to be vented. The pulse is slow, small, and slightly wiry. Fu Zi Tang (Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment, and Chu Shi Tang (Dampness-Removing Decoction) is also indicated.
Fu Zi Tang (Aconite Decoction)
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 1 piece, processed, skin and navel removed), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 1 liang, stir-fried), Poria (Fuling), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), each 3 liang; Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 2 liang).
Grind the above into a powder. Take 2 large qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 3 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until 7 fen remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
