Wind-cold (Shangfeng) causes nasal congestion and a heavy voice, headache and eye pain, with turbid discharge from the nose; this indicates wind pathogen invading the brain. It is appropriate to use Xinyi San (Magnolia Bud Powder) added with Xingren (Apricot Seed), Sangbai Pi (Morus Bark), and Kudingcha (Ilex Kudingcha Leaf), to clear the Lung and drain heat.
The Lung hangs in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), its Qi possesses a pure and descending nature, serving as the leader of the five Zang organs and the minister official, from which governance and regulation arise. Wind is a Yang pathogen, with a light and empty nature, specifically injuring the Upper Jiao. As stated in the *Neijing* (Inner Canon): "Clear pathogens attack the upper part." Since the pathogen has already attacked the upper region, it must first enter the Lung. Once the Lung is invaded by the pathogen, it steams and transforms into fire, ascending to invade the brain, consuming the brain's essence, and flowing down from the nose to become turbid mucus. This cannot be resolved merely by drugs that clear the Lung. One must rely on Xinyi (Magnolia Flower), Gaoben (Ligusticum Sinense Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), and Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) for their light and ascending properties to search out and eliminate wind-heat. Furthermore, assisting with Xingren (Apricot Seed) and Sangbai Pi (Morus Bark) to drain Lung heat, Mutong (Akebia Stem) and Kudingcha (Ilex Kudingcha Leaf) to promote urination and remove dampness from the Stomach, will clear the voice and resolve the condition in the brain.
In wind-cold, persistent coughing, hypochondriac pain, blood in sputum, and impaired breathing indicate that heat is forcing movement in the collaterals. It is appropriate to use Weisheng Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction) combined with Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction) added with Suzi (Perilla Fruit), Digupi (Phellodendron Bark), and Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), to descend Qi and harmonize the collaterals.
When wind-cold enters the Lung, it eventually transforms into heat over time. If Lung Qi is not clear, breathing becomes impaired; if heat forces the Lung collaterals, coughing with bloody sputum occurs. At this time, one should not rush to tonify upon seeing blood, lest one mistakenly follow the path for treating consumptive diseases. It is most suitable to use Weisheng (Reed Shoot) and Digupi (Phellodendron Bark) to clear heat, Yiren (Coix Seed) and Gualou Pi (Trichosanthes Peel) to moisten the Lung, Suzi (Perilla Fruit) and Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower) to descend Qi, Xinjiang (New Crimson Dye/Safflower) and Taoren (Peach Kernel) to harmonize Blood, thereby clearing both Qi and Blood without excessive deviation.
Severe coughing in wind-cold accompanied by the desire to vomit, and loss of smell, indicates that Lung pathogen has transmitted to the Stomach. It is appropriate to use Xiebai San (White Herb Powder) combined with Xiao Banxia Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction) added with Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Fuling (Poria), and Jingmi (Rice Grain), to clear the Lung and harmonize the Stomach.
Although the wind-cold has resolved, residual pathogenic factors remain and inevitably transmit to the Stomach, causing coughing and the desire to vomit. This is what the *Neijing* refers to as "Stomach Cough." Moreover, the loss of smell indicates that the Lung is still not clear. Therefore, Sangbai Pi (Morus Bark), Digupi (Phellodendron Bark), and Xingren (Apricot Seed) are used to clear the Lung; Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) are used to unblock the Stomach; and Gancao (Licorice Root) and Jingmi (Rice Grain) jointly harmonize the Yin of the Lung and Stomach.
