Treats lower back pain caused by overexertion, where the pain is severe as if broken and the body feels heavy as if weighed down by a mountain.
Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (2 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 3 qian), Danggui Shao (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, tip), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 5 qian), Jiu Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, wine-treated), Jiu Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-treated) (each 1 liang), Taoren (Persicae Semen) (30 pieces).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. For each dose, take 5 qian, add half a cup of wine and one and a half cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take hot.
Treats injuries from horse riding, such as spinal fracture due to falling, with evil blood flowing into the hypochondrium, causing extreme pain, inability to turn or lie on the side, and interference with diet.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Zhonggui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 1 qian), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Danggui Shao (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, tip), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 2 qian), Shexiang (Moschus, a small amount, separately ground), Shuizhi (Hirudo, 3 qian, stir-fried until smoke ceases, separately ground).
Divide the above herbs into two doses. For each dose, use two large cups of wine and one cup of water. Decoct all herbs except Shuizhi and Shexiang until one cup remains. Strain, place over fire to warm slightly, then mix in the separately ground Shuizhi and Shexiang paste. Take on an empty stomach. Two doses will lead to immediate recovery.
Treats lower back and spine pain, or pain resulting from blows, falls from heights, or stagnation of evil blood in the Taiyang Meridian (Taiyang Channel), causing unbearable pain in the lower back, spine, calves, arms, or thighs, along with nasal congestion.
Danggui Shao (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, tip) (1 fen), Zhonggui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Dilong (Pheretima) (each 4 fen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (5 fen), Sumu (Sappan Lignum) (6 fen), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (2 qian), Taoren (Persicae Semen) (6 pieces).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. For each dose, take 5 qian, add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take warm after meals.
Treats damp-heat pain in the lower back and legs.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) [Wind can overcome dampness], Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each 1 qian; initially cold, but prolonged illness transforms cold into heat; dispels dampness and relieves pain), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 qian; promotes meridian circulation), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (3 qian; removes dampness and relieves pain).
Combine the above herbs as one dose. Add two large cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
Treats sweating in cool/damp environments, reluctance to speak, fatigue and weakness in the four limbs, wandering pain. This is due to latent fire in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) failing to extend, floating and restless heat, sweating, and generalized body pain, caused by the interplay of wind-dampness. It is appropriate to use Yang-raising diaphoresis (inducing sweat gradually) to dissipate the pent-up fire and dampness in the meridians. Moreover, during the third month of spring, when the pulse is slow and delayed, diaphoresis is particularly suitable. This allows wind-dampness to be expelled and Yang Qi to rise, thereby resolving fatigue and promoting the flourishing of Qi and Blood.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 5 fen), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each 1 qian), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) [remove joints, lightly crush without making powder, decoct in five large cups of water until boiling, remove foam, decoct until two cups remain, then add the following herbs and decoct again], Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (each 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (3 pieces, remove skin).
Coarsely crush all herbs and combine as one dose. Decoct together with Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) until one cup remains. Take before going to bed. Do not eat too much beforehand. The goal is to achieve gradual, slight sweating for efficacy.
