The six pulses are wiry, fine, and choppy; pressing them feels empty. The complexion is white and lacks luster. This is a syndrome of blood loss (Tuo Xue). This is a severe cold syndrome. Treat with acrid-warm herbs to tonify and benefit Blood, assisted by sweet-warm, sweet-hot, and slippery/moistening agents. This will lead to recovery. Such loss of Blood also damages Essence and Qi.
For chronic epistaxis that does not stop, where there is inherent heat and sudden onset, and other medicines have failed: Use this divine method. Take one sheet of large paper, fold it eight or ten times. Wet it in water. Place it on the top center of the head. Iron it with a hot iron until the paper dries. The bleeding will stop immediately.
In the winter of Dingwei year, Cao Tongfu came from Henan. A runner named Xiao Zhai slept exposed in a cold and damp place, resulting in lower back pain unable to turn or lie sideways, and spasmodic pain in both hypochondria. This had persisted for over a month without healing.
The "Treatise on Lower Back Pain" states that lower back pain is mostly due to coagulated blood in the collaterals of the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Shaoyin meridians causing pain. A few cases belong to diseases of the external collateral vessels of the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. All are cured by removing the coagulated blood in the collaterals. The "Inner Canon" states: "During the three months of winter, acupuncture is prohibited; only medicine should be used to unblock the meridians and break down the stale blood in the collaterals." Use this prescription as the main treatment.
