A poor patient presented with the aforementioned symptoms and was cured by this prescription. Later, in winter, he resided in an empty room and slept on a very hot kang (heated brick bed), resulting in several episodes of hematemesis. He sought treatment again. It is speculated that due to the chronic nature of the disease, his constitution is deficient. There is a palpable mass near the navel with internal heat, insufficiency of upper jiao qi, and exterior yang deficiency. The treatment method should be to tonify the exterior yang and purge the interior deficiency heat. However, residing in an empty room in winter with thin clothing further depleted his yang. Severe cold on the exterior obstructed the interior fire and heat pathogens, preventing them from dispersing, thus causing blood to erupt from the mouth. Recalling a syndrome in Zhang Zhongjing's "Shanghan Lun" (Treatise on Cold Damage): in Taiyang Shanghan (Cold Damage of the Taiyang Channel), Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) should have been used to induce sweating, but it was not administered, leading to epistaxis. Administering Ma Huang Tang at that time would have led to immediate cure. This principle is identical. Therefore, I employed this method.
Treats cases where all six pulses are large but empty upon deep pressure, accompanied by palpitations, ruddy complexion, susceptibility to fright, and upper body heat. This indicates the pulse of the Hand Shaoyin Heart Channel. This condition arises from excess qi and loss of blood. One must use sweet-cold and sinking agents to strongly drain the floating qi and anchor the rising qi. Subsequently, use sweet-acrid-warm and slightly bitter agents to vigorously tonify the blood.
Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 1 qian 5 fen), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) (3 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 qian).
Chop the above herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take 5 qian per dose. Add two large zhan of water, decoct until one large zhan remains, strain, and take slightly warm before meals.
If the cun pulses of both hands are kou (cork-like, hollow in the middle), indicating blood pathology in the Upper Jiao, or if there is epistaxis or hematemesis, Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) will effect a cure.
