Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) [deprived of black skin], Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (each 2 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [deprived of skin], Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dangguishen, 当归身), Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji, 白芨), Santalum Album Lignum (Baitan, 白檀) (each 1 qian).
Take half a jin (approx. 500g) of small sesame oil, and decoct the aforementioned herbs wrapped in cotton within a silver vessel immersed in the oil. When properly decocted, clarify the liquid, filter out the dregs, add one liang (approx. 37.5g) of yellow beeswax, and continue decocting until ready.
For palpitations or fright caused by external objects, it is appropriate to calm the heart and spirit using Huanglian Anshen Wan (Coptis Calming Decoction). For fright caused by qi disturbance, Hanshui Shi Anshen Wan (Halloysite Calming Decoction) should be used. It is strictly forbidden to use Fangfeng Wan (Saposhnikovia Pill) or other acrid-warm medicines for treating wind, as they will certainly cause death.
Why? Acrid flavors disperse, are floating, warm, and hot; they belong to the Fire element. They can cause excess in the mother organ (Liver), assisting the proliferation of Wind Qi, all leading to death. If diarrhea occurs due to fright with green stool, the Liver should first be calmed using substances like Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂). Cold-cooling agents must not be used. Liangjing Wan (Cooling Fright Pill) is strictly prohibited. When Wood (Wind) is excessive, it inevitably overacts on Spleen and Stomach. One must first strengthen Earth (Spleen/Stomach), then drain its child organ (Heart). Yan Xiaozhong’s compilation of Qian Yi’s formulas, specifically Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder), aims to tonify Earth but is erroneous. The Zanthoxyli Fructus (Dingxiang, 丁香) in this formula is acrid and hot, aiding Fire; when Fire is excessive, Earth becomes even more deficient. Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingjupi, 青橘皮) drains Lung Metal. Dingxiang is acrid and hot, greatly draining Lung and Large Intestine. When Spleen is full/excess, one should drain its child; however, here Spleen is deficient, yet one drains the child to aid Fire, causing double deficiency of Earth, undoubtedly fatal. In cases of excessive Wood syndrome, if the Right Guan pulse is surging and large, palms are hot, and abdominal skin is hot, how can one use methods that aid Fire and drain Metal? If Cold Water overacts on Spleen Earth, presenting with vomiting, abdominal pain, dysentery/diarrhea with green-white stool, Yihuang San is indeed the sacred medicine. However, I establish a new formula: first drain Fire, tonify Metal, and greatly tonify Spleen Earth. This is the divine treatment method.
Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) (2 qian), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) (1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) (0.5 qian).
Cut these herbs into pieces for one dose. Decoct in one large cup (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to half a cup. Filter and take after meals. Adding Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, 白芍药) is particularly excellent.
These three herbs are sweet and warm, capable of tonifying Yuan Qi. Sweet flavor can drain Fire. As stated in the *Neijing*: "When heat dominates internally, drain it with sweet flavor and astringe with sour flavor." Baishaoyao is sour and cold; cold can drain Fire, and sour flavor can drain Liver Wood while greatly tonifying Lung Metal. By tonifying Metal and Earth positions, Metal becomes strong and Fire weak, preventing Wood from attacking Earth, thereby allowing the expulsion of Wind pathogens.
Formulas such as Yihuang San, Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), and Yangshen Wan (Nourish Spirit Pill) are divine medicines for treating severe Cold-Dampness in Spleen and Stomach. However, if one suffers from latent Fire in Spleen/Stomach, exhaustion from overwork, or chronic convulsions (Man Jing Feng, Slow Convulsion) resulting from stomach deficiency after taking hot medicines or Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Badou, 巴豆), using these medicines will certainly harm life. Chronic convulsions arise from prolonged diarrhea causing Spleen/Stomach deficiency. Qian Yi’s use of Qianghuo Gao (Notopterygium Paste) for chronic convulsions was erroneous. In Spleen deficiency, Fire pathogen attacks the Earth position; thus, it is called "deficient evil coming from behind" (mother affecting child). Excessive Fire causes excess in its mother (Wood); excessive Wood attacks Earth. Therefore, one should tonify the source of Earth with sweet-warm herbs at the Heart meridian, drain Fire in Spleen Earth with sweet-cold herbs, and tonify Metal in Spleen Earth with sour-cool herbs. This results in strong Metal and weak Fire in Spleen Earth, causing Wood to become deficient naturally. Consuming food but taking excessive medicine exacerbates the condition described above.
