[Original Text]
Si (Hissing): Governs the Lung, which connects to the Five Zang Organs. Upon exposure to Wind, nasal congestion occurs; when illness arises, perform Si, and treat it through Tu Na (exhalation and inhalation) therapy.
He (Chanting He): Governs the Heart, which connects to the tongue and the Five Zang Organs. When Heart heat causes dryness of the tongue, when illness arises, perform He, and treat it through Tu Na therapy.
Hu (Chanting Hu): Governs the Spleen, which connects to the lips. Theories state: Spleen dampness leads to cracked lips; when illness arises, perform Hu, and treat it through Tu Na therapy.
Xu (Chanting Xu): Governs the Liver, which connects to the eyes. Theories state: Liver excess leads to red eyes; when illness arises, perform Xu, and treat it through Tu Na therapy.
Chui (Chanting Chui): Governs the Kidney, which connects to the ears. Theories state: Kidney deficiency leads to deafness; when illness arises, perform Chui, and treat it through Tu Na therapy.
Xi (Chanting Xi): Governs the San Jiao (Triple Burner). When illness arises, perform Xi, and treat it through Tu Na therapy.
[Explanation]
There is a breathing exercise method that involves silently chanting specific syllables, known as "Fu Qi Tu Na Jue" (Breathing Air and Exhaling-Inhaling Formula) or "Liu Zi Qi Jue" (Six-Syllable Breath Formula). These six syllables are Si, He, Hu, Xu, Chui, and Xi. Each syllable corresponds respectively to the Lung, Heart, Spleen, Liver, Kidney, Five Zang Organs, and San Jiao.
The syllable Si corresponds to the Lung. The Lung governs Qi, opens into the nose, and its Qi permeates the Five Zang Organs. When the Lung is affected by Wind, nasal congestion occurs. If the Lung has disease, one can silently chant "Si" during exhalation for treatment.
The syllable He corresponds to the Heart. The Heart opens into the tongue and controls the Five Zang Organs. Heat in the Heart meridian causes dryness of the mouth and tongue. If the Heart has disease, one can silently chant "He" during exhalation for treatment.
The syllable Hu corresponds to the Spleen. The Spleen opens into the lips. Thus, the ancients said: Spleen stagnation of dampness leads to dry lips. If the Spleen has disease, one can silently chant "Hu" during exhalation for treatment.
The syllable Xu corresponds to the Liver. The Liver opens into the eyes. Thus, the ancients said: Liver Qi excess leads to red and painful eyes. If the Liver has disease, one can silently chant "Xu" during exhalation for treatment.
The syllable Chui corresponds to the Kidney. The Kidney opens into the ears. Thus, the ancients said: Kidney deficiency leads to deafness. If the Kidney has disease, one can silently chant "Chui" during exhalation for treatment.
The syllable Xi corresponds to the San Jiao. If the San Jiao has disease, one can silently chant "Xi" during exhalation for treatment.
Summary:
The exercise method of treating diseases by coordinating breathing with silent chanting of mantras was first recorded in Tao Hongjing's *Yang Xing Yan Ming Lu* (Record of Nourishing Nature and Extending Life) from the Liang Dynasty: "There is one method for inhaling Qi, and six methods for exhaling Qi. The one method of inhaling is called 'inhale'; the six methods of exhaling are Chui, Hu, Xi, He, Xu, and Si, all of which involve expelling air. In human respiration, each breath consists of an exhalation and an inhalation, inherently containing these numbers. To practice the method of long-breath exhalation: when it is cold, use Chui; when it is warm, use Hu. To address various illnesses: Chui dispels Wind, Hu dispels Heat, Xi dispels vexation, He directs Qi downward, Xu disperses stagnation, and Si resolves exhaustion."
Later generations associated the six syllables with the Five Zang Organs, the San Jiao, and the four seasons. For example, Zhiyi of the Sui Dynasty, in his *Xiu Xi Zhi Guan Zuo Chan Fa Yao* (Essentials of Cultivating Concentration and Insight in Sitting Meditation), presented the "Song of Six Syllables Corresponding to Five Zang Organs":
"He corresponds to the Heart, Chui to the Kidney,
Hu to the Spleen, Si to the Lung, known by sages;
When Liver heat arises, Xu arrives,
For San Jiao obstruction, simply utter Xi."
This book, in "Chapter 27: Elderly Section," quotes the *Zhen Xiu Shu* (Book of True Cultivation) "Song of Six Syllables Corresponding to Four Seasons":
"In spring, Xu brightens the eyes and supports the Liver with Wood;
At summer solstice, He cools the Heart fire naturally;
In autumn, Si surely moistens the Metal Lung;
For the Kidney, Chui ensures peace in Kan (Water);
San Jiao Xi eliminates vexation and heat;
Year-round, Hu aids the Spleen in digesting meals."
Remember not to make sound audible to the mouth and ears; its efficacy surpasses precious divine elixirs.
As for the specific practice methods and therapeutic indications of the Six-Syllable Formula, detailed discussions are provided in "Chapter 27: Elderly Section" of this book.
