To treat fever in the four limbs of men and women, heat between the bones and sinews, surface heat burning the skin like fire, and hands feeling hot to the touch. This condition is often caused by blood deficiency, or by excessive consumption of cold foods by the Spleen and Stomach, which stifles Yang Qi within the Earth element (Spleen). The treatment principle for this type of stifled Fire is "to disperse stifled Fire" (Huo Yu Fa Zhi).
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (5 fen), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (each 7 fen), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (deprived of the rhizome), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) (raw, each 8 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (4.5 fen, half raw, half honey-fried), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (7 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (5 fen).
Decoct these with fresh ginger and jujube, take warm. Avoid cold and raw foods. This addresses Deficient Fire (treat with tonification and dispersion).
To treat Excess Fire causing restlessness, agitation, thirst, and severe internal accumulation of heat.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (equal parts).
Decoct these with water. If Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) is added, it is named Zhizi Jinhua Wan (Gardenia Golden Flower Pill); it also treats Excess Fire and toxic heat. Excess Fire should be purged.
To treat Yin Deficiency with moving Fire, originating from deep within (this is an excellent formula for nourishing Yin).
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (5 fen), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (stir-fried with mint juice), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (10 fen), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Huangbai (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex) (stir-fried with honey water), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (as above, each 8 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (7 fen), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 8 fen), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (8 fen).
Decoct these with one slice of fresh ginger and one jujube. Separately, powder Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), mix with saliva, and apply to Yongquan (KI-1). For Qi deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) (each 8 fen); for cough, add Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (each 7 fen), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (3 fen); for hemoptysis, epistaxis, or vomiting blood, add Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) (8 fen), Oujie (Nelumbinis Neostemon) natural juice (3 spoons), and Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) powder (5 fen). This formula is largely similar to the preceding Yin-Nourishing Powder; use them interchangeably based on severity. Xuanningfen (Mirabilite) and Qiushi (Urine Sediment) both reduce Fire rapidly and should be used frequently. Tongbian (Human Urine) is also good (formulas are seen previously).
Phlegm syndromes belong to Dampness and are transformed from body fluids. Due to invasion of Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat pathogens or injury from Seven Emotions and diet, Qi becomes rebellious and fluids turbid, transforming into Phlegm-Fluids. Therefore, it is said that "Phlegm moves due to Fire," so reducing Fire is the priority (due to Fire); when Qi is rebellious, directing Qi downward is essential. The primary treatment is Jiawei Erchen Tang (Modified Two-Aged Decoction).
Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) (deprived of white pith, 1 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (processed), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) (each 1.5 qian), Bai Fuling (Poria) (deprived of bark, 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (stir-fried, 1 qian), Binglang (Arecae Semen) (stir-fried with human urine, 1 qian).
Decoct these with three slices of fresh ginger and two zhong of water until one zhong remains. Take after meals.
