Nourishing the heart, eliminating phlegm, and reducing fire is extremely effective.

Named Qutan Wan (Phlegm-Expelling Pill), clearing phlegm and reducing fire is very rapid, especially suitable for alcohol drinkers.
Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos) [one liang, stems and leaves removed, pure powder]; Nanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile) [five qian, prepared with ginger]; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [five qian, prepared with ginger].
First, soak Nanxing and Banxia in water: two days in summer, three days in autumn, five days in winter. Take out, dry, and grind together into fine powder. In the ninth lunar month, collect six semi-yellow Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), mix evenly with one cup of Danzhuli (Bamboo Sap). Combine these three ingredients, pound extremely soft in a stone mortar, and form thin cakes. Line a box with Huanghao (Artemisia annua) two inches thick, place the cake on the mugwort, cover with more mugwort, and bury slightly shallowly underground for twenty-one days. Take out, dry, and pound this Gualou Qu (Melon Ferment) in a stone mortar into fine powder. Mix with the following herbs:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [stir-fried]; Baifuling (Poria) [skin removed, each one liang]; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [stir-fried with wine]; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [stir-fried with ginger juice]; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) [soaked in Tongbian (Child's Urine), stir-fried]; Gancao (Licorice Root) [half roasted, each five qian]; Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) [bran-stir-fried, five qian]; Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [soaked in salt water, half with white pith removed, half without removal, one liang]; Jin Fan (Alumen) [one qian].
Grind the above herbs into powder, mix uniformly with the previous Gualou Qu powder. Bind with Tansheng Jiangzhi (Phlegm-resolving Ginger Juice) paste to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take forty to fifty pills per dose, morning and evening.
This formula comes from *Yijia Biyong* (Essentials for Medical Practitioners); among ancient and modern phlegm formulas, its efficacy is unmatched. Long-term use also strengthens the spleen and stomach; trials show miraculous results. For cases where phlegm-fire causes extreme danger, pound the medicine into a paste and instill it through the nose; all are cured.
Vertigo symptoms are due to deficiency-phlegm and fire flaming upward; Qingyang Chu Xuan Tang (Clear Yang Eliminate Vertigo Decoction) should be used as the main treatment.
Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos); Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) [each eight fen]; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [prepared]; Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); Baifuling (Poria); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [each one qian]; Binglang (Arecae Semen) [eight fen]; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [six fen]; Gancao (Licorice Root) [four fen].
Decoct the above herbs with three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), take after meals.
Vomiting and fanwei (regurgitation/food trapping) all belong to stomach deficiency with rebellious qi, with phlegm above the diaphragm; there are cold patterns and heat patterns. Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) should be used as the main treatment, modified according to cold or heat.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [white pith removed, one and a half qian]; Fuling (Poria) [skin removed, one and a half qian]; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [prepared with ginger juice, two and a half qian].
Decoct the above herbs with water. Before taking, add half a zhan of natural Shengjiang juice (Fresh Ginger Juice) to mix and drink. If heat pattern, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [each one and a half qian]; if cold pattern, add ten slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) to decoct together, still add half a zhan of ginger juice when taking; if stomach deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [each one and a half qian], also use ginger juice when taking.
Fanwei (regurgitation) and gesi (diaphragmatic food trapping) symptoms belong to qi deficiency, characterized by a slow and weak right pulse; blood deficiency is characterized by a rapid, weak, and choppy left pulse.
Fuxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma variant) [seven fen]; Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) [one and a half qian]; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [two qian]; Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) [one and a half qian]; Honghua (Carthami Flos) [three fen]. For both qi and blood deficiency with excessive foam in the mouth, use the aforementioned eight herbs together.
For phlegm patterns, the pulse is often slippery and rapid, with cun and guan positions deep, hidden, or large; use Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [white pith removed, one and a half qian]; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [two qian, ginger-prepared]; Fuling (Poria) [one and a half qian]; Gancao (Licorice Root) [five fen].
For heat patterns, the six pulses are surging, rapid, and forceful; use Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) in equal parts.
For cold patterns, the six pulses are deep, minute, and slow; use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) [each one qian], Gancao (Licorice Root) [halved dose], plus Baixiaren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), and Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) [each seven fen]. Mix with Tongbian (Child's Urine), Jiuji (Chinese Chive Juice), Niu/Nai/Yangru (Cow/Sheep Milk), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), totaling half a zhong. Add to half a zhong of the herbal decoction, mix evenly, and take once a day. Although this method is slow, it avoids harsh and drying properties. If one can clear the mind, reduce desires, and practice internal observation for self-nourishment, long-term use will surely yield miraculous effects.
Huangdan (jaundice) symptoms specifically belong to damp-heat, similar to gu dan (grain jaundice); Yinchen Wuling San (Artemisiae Scopariae and Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) should be used as the main treatment.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) [three qian]; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Skin) [each one and a half qian]; Zhuling (Polyporus); Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) [each one qian]; Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma); Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus); Huashi (Talcum) [each one and a half qian]; Gancao (Licorice Root) [raw, three fen]; Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) [two fen].
Decoct the above herbs with water, add one bundle of Dengxincao (Junci Medulla), and take after meals.
