Take 3 qian of Perilla Leaf (Zisuye), five crushed Oil Walnut (Youhetao), three slices of Ginger (Shengjiang), and two stalks of Scallion White (Congbai). Add two bowls of water, decoct until one bowl remains, and take hot. Slight sweating will lead to resolution. Do not use Scallion White in summer. These two prescriptions are extremely effective and very convenient in remote areas without medical access.
The *Neijing* states: "In the third month (lunar April to June), this is called the time of flourishing beauty. Heaven and Earth qi intersect, and all things bloom and bear fruit. One should sleep late and rise early, not resent the sun; keep the mind free from anger, allow the spirit to flourish, let the qi vent, as if loving to be outside. This is the way of nourishing growth in accordance with Summer qi. To violate it damages the Heart, leading to Malaria (Nue) in autumn, due to insufficient gathering power, resulting in severe illness at Winter Solstice." Generally, during the three months of summer, heavenly qi flourishes and extends outward, Yang qi disperses externally while Yin qi hides internally. Therefore, various ailments in summer are suitable for treating by tonifying Yin and nourishing Yang. The Spleen and Stomach prefer warmth and dislike cold; dietary taboos include melons, fruits, ice, and water; medicinal prohibitions include purely cold-natured herbs. Ancient sages invariably added Roasted Ginger (Paojiang) among many cooling herbs, which embodies this principle. In summer, Heart and Small Intestine Fire govern, injuring Lung and Large Intestine Metal. Sun Simiao formulated Shengmai San to rescue Geng Metal from Summer Heat injury. When Metal is clear, Water can nourish its source of transformation; the intent is subtle. Li Dongyuan expanded on this idea to formulate Qingshu Yiqi Tang, focusing primarily on Stomach Qi. When Earth is prosperous, Metal naturally flourishes and is not constrained by Fire. When Spleen and Stomach are strong, they transport and transform effectively, nourishing the entire body, and Summer-Dampness pathogens cannot invade. Below are detailed descriptions of various prescriptions suitable for summer; apply them flexibly according to symptoms, do not adhere rigidly to a single method.
At the beginning of summer and end of spring, symptoms such as headache, weak legs, poor appetite, body heat, and mental fatigue are named "Zhuxia" disease. This condition belongs to Yin deficiency and Qi insufficiency. It is suitable to treat with this prescription:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian each), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (1.5 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (0.5 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (0.8 qian each), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (1 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (9 grains).
Decoct the above with 1.5 bowls of water, adding one slice of Ginger (Shengjiang) and one Jujube (Dazao). Take orally. If there is phlegm, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber).
