The song states:
There is a celestial prescription in the human world for treating epidemics, using one tael of Jiangcan (Cocoon Silkworm) and two taels of Dahuang (Rhubarb).
Made into pills the size of bullets with ginger juice, taken with well water to bring immediate cooling relief.
Red adzuki beans (Vigna angularis), quantity unrestricted, placed in a new cloth bag,
soaked in a well for two days, then taken out; every member of the family takes twenty-one pills (if not infected by the plague, this verifies its efficacy).
Whenever entering the home of a plague patient, apply powder of Xionghuang (Realgar) mixed with sesame oil to the nostrils, or pre-drink
one or two cups of Realgar-infused liquor before entering the sickroom to avoid infection. Upon exiting,
insert a paper wick deep into the nasal cavity to induce sneezing, which is considered optimal.
To treat mountain miasma, maladaptation to local conditions, etc., in the Min and Guang regions.
Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 1.5 qian), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 qian), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb, 1.5 qian).
Decoct these with three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and one Jujube (Ziziphus Jujuba). Another method substitutes Shichangpu with Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), named Shenzhu San (Divine Atractylodes Powder), which is particularly effective for dispersing Qi stagnation.
To treat mountain miasma and Gu poison (Gu Poison) in Lingnan and the Liangguang regions. If officials stationed there feel slight discomfort, take one pill immediately; vomiting or purging will follow, leading to prompt recovery. It also antidotes all accidental poisonings, including those affecting cattle, horses, and livestock.
Shancigu (Cremanthodium Bulb, similar to Laoya Suan but distinguishable by hairy bracts; peel, bake dry, and grind to fine powder, 2 liang),
Qianjinzi (Croton Seed, also known as Xuisui Zi; remove shell, grind, and express oil, 2 liang),
Hongya Daji (Euphorbia Humifusa Root, also known as Zi Daji; the variety from Jiangnan is superior, resembling Licorice but harder; do not use Mian Daji; bake dry and grind to fine powder, 1.5 liang),
Shexiang (Musk, 3 qian, ground separately). Another version adds Xionghuang (Realgar, 5 qian); it is effective even without it.
Grind the above ingredients to fine powder, mix evenly with paste made from glutinous rice, and pound over a thousand times. Another version stamps them into forty pills; take half a pill per dose, dissolved in water. For any swelling or toxicity, grind and apply topically. Preparation must be performed on Winter Solstice, Dragon Boat Festival, Qixi Festival, or Double Ninth Day, on Tianyue Erde days or Tianyi days, in a cleaned room with incense burned sincerely. It will surely be efficacious. Avoid letting women, chickens, dogs, or mourners see the process.
Whenever encountering Shanghan (Cold Damage) and lacking medicine in haste, regardless of whether it is a Yin or Yang syndrome, use only one tael of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), ten stems of Congbai (Scallion White), and two large cups of good wine,
decoct until one cup remains.
Strain the dregs, drink hot, cover with blankets until profuse sweating occurs, then the condition resolves. Do not allow excessive sweating. Avoid severe sweating. In spring and autumn, follow this formula; in summer, halve the ginger and scallion; in winter, double the dosage. If
added with Heidou (Black Soybean, 2 he), stir-fried and decocted together with ginger and scallion, it is especially excellent in winter.
