In spring, to nourish the Liver, take it with Shaoyao Chuanxiong Tang (Peony and Ligusticum Decoction); in summer, to nourish the Heart, take it with Bai Fuling Tang (White Poria Decoction); in autumn, to nourish the Lungs, take it with Fuling Jiegeng Tang (Poria and Platycodon Decoction); in winter, to nourish the Kidneys, take it with Rousongrong Wutou Tang (Cistanche and Aconite Decoction). For other miscellaneous diseases, adjust the guiding herbs according to symptoms before administration; these are not recorded in detail here.
According to the *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine): Ancient physicians treated diseases before they occurred, rather than after they had developed, thus earning the title of "Shang Gong" (Superior Physicians). Diet and sexual activity are two major human desires; one must especially adhere to seasonal regulation and avoid excess to prevent illness. However, many people fail to understand this. Herein, I briefly recount what I have heard: Regarding diet, as stated in the *Neijing*, "Yin is generated from the Five Flavors, yet the Five Zang Organs are injured by the Five Flavors." If one indulges in taste preferences through eating and drinking, one must not exceed moderation; excess will damage the upright Qi. By carefully harmonizing the Five Flavors, the bones remain straight, tendons flexible, Qi and Blood flow freely, interstices (Cou Li) become dense, and bone Qi becomes refined. Following such methods allows one to long enjoy their heavenly mandate. This is the principle advocated by Li Dongyuan regarding Zhizhu Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill). Regarding sexual activity, as stated in the *Neijing*, "Without Yang, Yin cannot be generated; without Yin, Yang cannot be transformed." This is the profound mystery of nature and the fundamental principle of human conduct. However, this pertains to the river of love and sea of desire; only those of wisdom can restrain their emotions when facing beautiful scenes. During intercourse, essence should not be shaken; although Qi may be stimulated, Shen (Spirit) remains still. One should wait for fatigue with ease, await noise with tranquility, view form as emptiness, and treat non-being as being, thereby seizing the supreme treasure and extending the source of longevity. Since the decline of the world, the people have mostly drowned in pleasure, indulging in endless lust. How can such easily depleted but hard-to-accumulate Yin Essence suffice? This is why Zhu Danxi established Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill). Furthermore, Guan Shi stated: Those who have not heard the Great Dao indulge their minds, becoming lost in worldly pleasures, chasing intellect with spirit, chasing gains and losses with worry and fear, chasing etiquette with labor and hardship, and chasing wealth with body and life. If these four pursuits are not abandoned, the Heart suffers disease. Exerting oneself physically, causing dryness and rage leading to rebellious Qi, drinking while exposed to wind, and craving pungent and salty flavors cause the Liver to suffer disease. Consuming raw or cold foods, immoderate temperatures, prolonged lying down, overeating, or excessive hunger cause the Spleen to suffer disease. Sitting long on damp ground, forcing entry into water, indulging in sexual activity, and causing leakage of the Three Fields cause the Kidney to suffer disease. (Loud calling, frequent arguments, excessive responding, exposure to cold and heat changes, and indiscriminate consumption of salty and bitter foods) cause the Lungs to suffer disease. Once these five diseases arise, one becomes emaciated before old age, and ill before emaciation. When illness strikes, it layers upon itself; if severe, death is inevitable. Alas! These are self-inflicted consequences due to thoughtless and reckless actions. Gentlepersons concerned with health preservation can avoid illness throughout their lives by guarding against these five aspects and comprehending the theories of diet and sexual conduct. The Classic states: "Treat disease before it occurs, not after it has occurred." This is precisely what is meant.
